And no mother bird with hungry fledglings in her nest—

having crossed every wasteland out of love for them,

then finding nothing to ward off their suffering,

with every path to sustenance beyond her reach,

letting her wings droop from weakness and curling up

on a spreading tree's bough, in sight of her young—

is more distraught than I if I see my acquaintances

afflicted by poverty concealed by their fortitude.
