A full moon rising in the spheres of eloquence,
a pearl gleaming upon the neck of excellence,

or verse by one whose call was answered from glory's summit
by all he sought, obedient and attentive to him?

The embodiment of intelligence, the fruit of understanding
whose reach the aspirant scarcely hopes to attain.
ياO مُفْنِياًone who exhausts عَصْرَthe years of الشَّبِيبةِyouth جاهِداًstriving

O you who spend your youthful years striving
in every branch of learning, severing attachments,
يَمْشِيhe walks عَلَىupon نَصِّthe explicit wording of الدّليلِthe proof مُبايناًkeeping apart

he follows the explicit text of proof, keeping apart
from opinion, content with Ta-Ha's explicit words.
وغَدَاand he has become بهَدْيِin the guidance of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad وصِحابِهِand his companions

And he has taken the guidance of Muhammad and his companions
as his garment, casting off whatever lies beyond it.
ظَفِرَتْhave won يَدَاكَyour two hands بِمَنْبَعِthe fount of الْعِلْمِknowledge الّذِيwhich

Your two hands have won the fount of knowledge that
is transmitted from the infallible one; opinion is deceptive.
إنّindeed امْرَءاًa man يَأْبَىrejects الدَّلِيلَthe proof تَعَصُّباًout of partisanship

Indeed, a man who rejects proof out of partisanship
is the one who cuts off his own nose.
مَنْwhoever كانُwas قُدْوَتَهhis model مَقَالُthe words of مُحمَّدٍMuhammad

Whoever takes Muhammad's words as his model
is well versed; anyone else is lame.
كَمْhow great بَيْنَbetween مَنْone who قَالَsays الرَّسُولُthe Messenger قَضَىruled بِذاthus

How great the gulf between one who says, 'The Messenger ruled thus,'
and has a sound, conclusive chain of transmission for it,
وَفَتىًand a youth يَقُولُsays أَبُوAbu (father of) فُلانٍSo-and-so قُدْوَتيmy model

and a youth who says, 'Abu So-and-so is my model;
I am content with what he approves; I do not dispute.'
فالعِلْمُfor knowledge كُلُّall of الْعِلْمِknowledge إِنْصافُthe fairness of الْفَتَىa young man
وَبِهِand with it أَتَىcame النَّصُّthe text الصَّرِيحُexplicit الشائِعُwidely known
For knowledge, all knowledge, lies in a man's fairness,
and the clear, widely known text has brought it.
مَنْwhoever كانَwas أَعْرَفmore knowledgeable بالصَّوابِabout what is right فَحظُّهُthen his share
فيin الْعِلْمِknowledge حَظٌّa share فيin الْحَقيقَةِtruth واسِعُvast
Whoever knows best what is right—his share
of knowledge is truly a vast one.
أَمّاas for كانَwas أَعْرَفmore knowledgeable بالصَّوابِabout what is right فَحظُّهُthen his share
فيin الْعِلْمِknowledge حَظٌّa share فيin الْحَقيقَةِtruth واسِعُvast
As for one who knows best what is right, his share
of knowledge is truly a vast one.
لَوْif كانَhe were فيin كُلِّall الْمَعارِفِbranches of knowledge مُفْرَداًunrivaled

Were he unrivaled in every branch of knowledge,
and everyone turned to him on subtle points.
وَأَقُولُand I say قَدْindeed وافَىhas come إلَيْناto us مِنْكَfrom you ياO
بَدْرَfull moon of الْهُدَىguidance بَحْثٌan inquiry بَديعٌmarvelous رائعُsplendid
And I say: there has come to us from you, O
full moon of guidance, a marvelous, splendid inquiry,
عَنْabout حُكْمِthe ruling on لُبْسٍwearing للمُعَصْفَرِof safflower-dyed cloth مالwhat (probable reading) الّذيthat which
قَدْhas صَحّproved authentic مماof what قَالَsaid فِيهِabout it الشارِعُthe Lawgiver
on the ruling for wearing safflower-dyed cloth: what
has been soundly established from what the Lawgiver said about it?
وكَذاكَand likewise سائِرُthe rest of كُلِّevery ثَوْبٍgarment أحْمَرٍred
هَلْwhether جَاءَhas come عَنْهُfrom him مِنَamong الأدِلّةِthe proofs مانِعُa prohibition
And likewise every other red garment:
has any evidence prohibiting it come from him?
واعْلَمْand know بأنَّthat الأَمْرَthe matter فيهِconcerning it تَخَالُفٌconflict
فيin السُّنَّةِthe prophetic tradition الْغَراradiant وفِيهِand concerning it تنَازُعُdispute
And know that this matter has conflicting reports
in the radiant Sunnah, and is a subject of dispute.
والْجَمْعُand reconciliation بالإجْماعِby consensus صارَhas become مُقَدَّماًgiven precedence
وَلَدَيْهِand beside it تَرْجِيحٌgiving preference among الأَدِلّةِthe proofs ضَائِعُfutile
Reconciling them takes precedence by consensus,
and beside it, preferring one proof over another is futile.
وأَرَاهُand I consider it فيماin what نَحْنُwe فِيهِin it مُمْكِناًpossible
وَهْوَand it is الذيwhat للشّكِّof doubt عِنْديfor me رافِعُa remover
And I consider it possible in the matter before us,
and it is what dispels doubt for me.
قَدْindeed تَمّis complete مَسْلَكَهُits path بِغَيْرِwithout تَعَسُّفٍstrained interpretation
فاسْلُكْهُso follow it فَهْوَfor it is لماof what تَفَرّقَhas become scattered جامِعُa gatherer
Its path is complete, without strained interpretation;
so follow it, for it gathers what was scattered.
والْحَقُّand truth أَبْلَحُmanifest (probable reading) والدَّليلُand proof مُحْكَّمٌthe appointed arbiter
والْكُلُّand all مِنْfrom نَهْرِthe river of النُّبُوَّةِprophethood كارِعُdrinking directly
And truth is manifest, and proof is the arbiter,
and all drink from the river of prophethood.
فاسْتَمْلِso take dictation ماwhat أُمْليهِI dictate it دُمْتَmay you remain مُنَعّماًblessed
يَحْبوكَmay He favor you بالصُّنْعِwith kindness الْجَميلِbeautiful الصّانِعُthe Maker
So take down what I dictate—may you remain blessed;
may the Maker favor you with gracious care.
واعْذُرْand pardon me فَهَذاfor this النَّظْمُverse غَيْرُnot مُهَذَّبٍpolished
ماnot فِيهin it ماwhat يَهْوَىdesires الْبَليغُthe eloquent speaker البارِعُaccomplished
And pardon me: this verse is unpolished;
it lacks what the accomplished master of eloquence desires.
لَكِنَّهُbut it is فيconcerning بَحْثِan inquiry into عِلْمٍknowledge بَيْنَناbetween us
والشِّعْرُand poetry للمَقْصودِto the intended purpose مِنْهُof it تابِعُsubordinate
But it concerns an inquiry into knowledge between us,
and poetry is subordinate to its intended purpose.
