Leave us be, and do not approach our gathering,

and do not burn us with your fires.

We have accepted that we are the Imam's slaves,

and we are, as he wished, blind and deaf.

We shackle our feet with chains,

and bind our mouths with bridles,

and cover our bed with stupidity,

and ask of our life no more than a dream.

So what harm is there if we live

    our lives in pitch-black darkness?

We have offered life to our idols,

and the beating of hearts and the light of sight.

So what do we seek from the radiance of the suns?

And what do we find pleasing in the moon's light?

And in insects we have an example

that makes us turn away from human life.

    هبطنا إلى مستواه الأغر

    And in the world of worms there is a pleasant life;

we have descended to its glorious level.

And if we could descend still farther,

we would descend to the levels of stone.

You want us—woe to you!—to rise in revolt,

yet we are only like the worms of graves.

We live on the corpses of the dead,

the likes of you among the lovers of evil.

We suck the blood of your brave warriors,

and mock its woe and doom.

We nest in a skull where once nested

before us the pride of conceit.

We shall await your heroes' deaths

for a long time—and we are indeed a patient people.
