A rag-cloaked man whispers, reclining;

upon him rests the majesty of wisdom and stature.

A nubile young woman seats him among us; her

sweat is scattered like pearls.

She tightens a waistcloth over a rock,

and has not attached hair to hair.

تناولني فاسيغ الشراب

وأجرع من قرع معتبر

She hands it to me, and I swallow the drink,

and gulp from a sizable gourd.

وتطعمني من قديد الشواء

وتطرفني بعجيب السير

وتطرفني بعجيب السير

And she feeds me dried strips of roast meat,

and entertains me with wondrous tales.

I gratefully cherished her affection,

and Sitt al-Nafar preserves her affection.

I am free; there is no good in that company:

I kept their company, and so kept company with boredom.

In ignorance I rushed toward their affection,

and I have no excuse for my ignorance.

Their laughter I took to be sincere,

and it popped like the round pods of the ushar shrub.

The croaking of the daluka drums beneath the evening

clashed, blazing, and became entangled.

I feared the morning behind the darkness,

conspiring over the daughters of fate.

ولي وطن ضائع منتظر

I am alone, though among companions gathered at night,

and I have a homeland, lost and awaited.
