    Leafy youth amid the withering of gray hair,

    and an elegant morning in the ashes of sunset.

    A pool—night wheels from every side

    around it, yet its two hands have won no cup.

    Look, then, at the sun, putting her breast in night's mouth,

    barren in love from anguish and depletion.

    فجاءت بصبح أنكرته غريب

    Did an ancient despair impregnate her with its light,

    so she bore an alien morning she disowned?

    فما مسها ستر الدجى بمغيب

    The universe disowned her, a mother struck down;

    yet darkness's veil did not touch her at sunset.

    She glimmers, clutching nothing; her cries

    are sparks of stars in the darkness of unseen depths.

    تهاوى دمع في الرحيل سكوب

    And every summit shakes her off its base;

    tears tumbled down, streaming at departure.

    The stillness of night settles, and its immobility listens

    to a cry in its breast, and a creeping stir.

    I looked toward a dawn standing at the door,

    then recoiled from a light keeping watch on me.

    And I returned to a shadow stretched upon the sand,

    questioning it about my lot and my share.

    يلج ذبيحاً في شباك وجيب

    And my heart is yearning, hopeful despite fear;

    it enters, slaughtered, the nets of throbbing.

    I turn it over in tears as a bereaved mother turns

    a foster-child gone, with no other child to follow him.

    I part with thirty years of my life,

    and have not yet come through this span with a beloved.

    And what are my memories? How often I imagined, inhaling

    the hidden essence of perfumes from luxuriant leaves.

    A morning I have known will do me no good,

    returning, rapacious, with a yesterday that will not return.

    ينيم جراحي أويبك شحوبي

    And in life there is a tavern, deceiving its drinkers, smiling;

    it lulls my wounds to sleep or weeps for my pallor.

    At night it provisions me with sins, and I turn back

    to remorse, grievous with reproach, dejected.

    Is every love a bitter enemy, and a companion,

    beloved, when I reflect, no beloved at all?

    Alone, I have a yearning heart and a longing

    for an amorous date palm beyond the seas.

    and their uncanny remoteness, like phantoms of a mirage.

    faithful to me, knowing nothing of the deceit of hearts.

    يهدهد صبري يائيسا وندوبي

    Youth, whose phantom did not leave me with yesterday,

    cradles my despairing patience and my scars.

    يُعاشرني في قلتي وخطوبي

    And I have a homeland with which I shared life in misery;

    it keeps me company in my poverty and misfortunes.

    then I am no stranger vanishing within its graves.

    [I watch?] a self of mine striving along the road,

    and he appears from among the paths.

    beyond lifeless mountains and steppes.

    my darkness comes from the wine of forenoon and my sunset.

    and succor it with a healer from my vine.

    unsheathing, though slain, the sword of Shabib.

    And I despaired, no longer striving; my [thoughts?] stretched out

    hands of one far away who called, and one answering.
