They are before my eyes, whether they go upland or down to the lowlands,

and my heart's desire, whether they are fair or unjust.

And they hold the secret's place within my heart, even if

separation has carried them far and their abode lies remote.

I parted from them, yet they seem to be before my eyes,

because my thoughts conjure them up for me.

They left their houses and abodes; they have nothing

but hearts as houses and abodes.

And they settled the barren wastes, which became

through them human dwellings, though still wastes.

Even if Egypt has become mine since their departure,

they have cities in the heart of the wilderness.

Or if they dwell in Najd, I have after them

two neighbors: the flood of tears and remembrance.

They grew used to keeping company with wilderness and deserts, since

    homelands and hopes forsook them,

on young she-camels like crescents when they

    appear—yet above them are moons.

And it is as though the horizons, one and all, had sworn

that no rest should ever endure for them there.

And time has been night since their dwelling grew distant

from me—and after that daylight, can there be day?

Among them I have a neighbor who claims my protection,

if hearts' right to sanctuary is upheld.

No, rather a captive in the bonds of his fidelity

to them—for captivity has killed fidelity.

    فلنا اعتبارٌ فيك واستعبارُ

    O dwellings of loved ones, decay has changed you;

so in you we find a lesson and a cause for tears.

May rain bless that time of yours; alike were

its hours, all of them hours before dawn.

The years were short for me then; but since they went away,

the days have grown long for me, though they are short.

O Time, let not the weakness of my fortitude deceive you:

indeed, I can endure all things but love.
