رَبَعَ الفؤادُ خِلالَ تلك الأربُعِ

فكأنّها أولى به من أضلُعي
The heart dwelt among those abodes,
My heart was cloven in four 'midst that blessed four,
as though they had more claim to it than my ribs.
As though for it they were more rightful than my ribs.

And it remained there, leaving my breast desolate,
So it took dwelling there and the wings became tattered,
bereft of it; even the barren deserts are not so desolate.
Of it and how is the waste, the wastes with tattered things?
وأَرىand I see الصَّباthe east wind تمرىmilks السّحابَthe clouds وإنَّماyet only

And I see the east wind milking the clouds, yet it is only
And I see the youth passing the clouds, yet only
the heart's yearning that milks the clouds of tears.
The clouds of his pain are passing, the clouds of tears.
