بقولَيwith my two remarks فاسمعso listen ماwhat الذيthat أناI قائلُsaying
The full moon of the sky disputed with me, and I bested it
The full moon reproached me, so I reproached him in return
With my two remarks—so listen to what I have to say.
Listen to what I said in response:
أتىit came فيat انتصافِthe midpoint of الشهرthe month يحكيكit resembles you فيin البَهَاsplendor
وفيand in النُّورradiance لكنbut أينwhere منكcompared with you الشّمائلُthe virtues
It came at midmonth, resembling you in splendor
He came at mid month relating splendor
And in radiance—but how can its virtues compare with yours?
And light, but where are your fine attributes?
فقلتُso I said لهto it ياO بدرُfull moon إنَّكindeed you are ناقصٌimperfect
سوىexcept for ليلةٍone night والكاملُand the perfect one الدهرَforever كاملُperfect
So I said to it, "O full moon, you are imperfect
So I said: "O full moon, you are incomplete
Except for one night, while the perfect one is perfect forever."
Except for one night, while the cycle of time is complete."
