أياO صاحِبَيyou two keepers of سجنِthe prison of الخِزانةِthe treasury خلِّياlet in, you two
منof الصُّبحthe dawn ماwhatever يبدُوappears سَناهُits radiance لناظريto my eye
O you two keepers of the treasury prison, let in
Oh my two companions in the prison of confinement
Whatever gleam of dawn appears to my eye.
In the morning what appears to me is not clear
فوَاللهِfor, by God ماnot أدرىI know أطَرفِىَwhether my eye ساهرٌawake
علىthroughout طولthe length of هذاthis الليلِnight أمor غيرُnot ساهرِawake
For, by God, I do not know whether my eye is awake
By Allah I don't know if my eyes are awake
Through this long night, or not awake.
All night long or not awake
وماand not كنتُI was أخشىI fear قبلbefore سَجنكماyour imprisoning me, you two علىfor
دموعَىmy tears أنthat يقطُرنَthey drip خوفَfor fear of المقاطِرِthe stocks
And before you two imprisoned me, I never feared for
And I did not fear before your imprisonment
My tears—that they might drip in fear of the stocks.
That my tears would drip in fear of rain
وماand not لىَfor me مَنanyone whom أشكوI complain إليهto him أذاكماthe harm you two cause
سوىexcept ملكking of الدنياthe world شجاعِShuja بنِson of شاوِرِShawar
And I have no one to complain to of the harm you two inflict
And I have no one to complain to but you two
Except the king of the world, Shuja ibn Shawar.
Except the king of the world, courageous son of Shawir
