أأحبابَناO our beloved ones ماwhat ليwith me إذاwhen ماemphatic particle ذكرتُكمI remember you
وماand not أناI ناسٍforgetful غالcarried off صبرِىَmy patience غُولُa ghoul
O our beloved ones, why is it that whenever I recall you—
though I never forget—a ghoul carries off my patience?
وإنand if شامَsighted برقَlightning الشامal-Sham (the Levant) طرفىmy eye وشمَّرتand drew back
علىdespite البُعدthe distance عنهُfrom it للظَّلامof darkness ذُيولُtrailing skirts
And if my eye spies al-Sham’s lightning, while
darkness’s skirts draw back, though I am far from it,
تداركcaught in time قلبىmy heart أنlest يطيرَit fly away صبابةًin longing
بَنانٌfingers كأُنبوبِlike the shaft of اليراعa reed pen نحيلُslender
my heart is caught before it flies away in longing
by fingers slender as a reed-pen’s shaft.
وخُيِّلَand it seemed ليto me أنَّthat السُّيوفَthe swords بجوِّهِin its sky
سُلِلنَthey were unsheathed وأنّىand that I بينهنَّamong them قَتيلُslain
And it seemed to me that swords in its sky
had been drawn, and that I lay slain among them.
لَئِنeven if أَقفَرَتbecame deserted مِنَّاof us الديارُthe dwellings ومِنكُمُand of you
وأَمسَتand have become مَغانيهنَّtheir dwelling places وَهيَwhile they are طلولُruins
Even if the dwellings lie empty of us and you,
and their dwelling places have become ruins,
فَإِنَّthen indeed لناfor us فيin آلِthe house of مُنقِذِMunqidh أُسوةًa consoling example
يهونُgrows light لديهاbeside it الخطبُthe calamity وهوَthough it is جليلُgrave
yet in the house of Munqidh we have a consoling example,
beside which calamity grows light, though grave.
نبَتproved inhospitable بِهمُto them أوطانُهمtheir homelands فترحَّلُواso they departed
وللمجدِand for glory فىin ذاكَthat الرّحيلِdeparture رحيلُa departure
Their homelands proved inhospitable to them, so they departed,
and in that departure, glory too departed.
بلادٌlands بِهاin them منfrom عِزِّهمtheir might وَعَطائِهِمand their bounty
وُعورٌrugged ground لمنfor whoever يَنتابُهاvisits them وَسهولُand level plains
Lands where their might and bounty offer
rugged ground and level plains to those who visit.
وللدّهرand for time منfrom أيمانهمtheir right hands ووجوهِهمand their faces
بِهاin them غُررٌwhite forehead markings ماnever تَنقَضِيfade وحُجولُand white leg markings
And time, through their right hands and faces,
bears unfading blazes and white stockings there.
خلَتlay deserted فالربيعُso the spring الغَضُّlush مَحلٌbarrenness لفقدهمfor lack of them
بهاin them والصّباحُand the morning المستنيرُradiant أَصيلُlate afternoon
The land lies empty; in their absence, lush spring is barren
there, and the radiant morning is late afternoon.
وَسارواand they journeyed علىin رَغمِspite of العِداthe foes ودليلُهمand their guide
ثناءٌpraise لَهُمfor them فيin الخافِقَينEast and West جَميلُfair
And they journeyed on despite their foes; their guide
was the fair praise of them in East and West.
وماand not كنتُI was أدريI know قبلbefore أنthat يترحّلُواthey depart
بأنّof the fact that الجبالَthe mountains الرّاسِياتِfirmly rooted تزولُmove away
And before they departed, I did not know
that firmly rooted mountains could move away.
أذلُّواthey humbled خُطوبَthe calamities of الدّهرِtime قَهراًby force فَبَينهمso between them
قَديماًfrom of old وبَينَand between الحادِثاتِmisfortunes ذُحولُblood feuds
They humbled time’s calamities by force; thus between them
and misfortunes lie age-old blood feuds.
