خليلىَّmy two friends إنif ضاقَتhave grown narrow بِلادٌlands بُرحبِهاdespite their breadth
ورائيbehind me فماthen ... not ضاقَhas grown narrow الفضاءُthe expanse أمامياahead of me
My two friends, if lands, for all their breadth, have grown narrow
behind me, the expanse ahead of me has not grown narrow.
يَظُنُّsuppose رجالٌsome men أنّنيthat I جِئتُI came سائلاًbegging
فأسخطنىand made me angry أنthat خابَfailed فيهمin them رجائياmy hope
Some men suppose that I came begging,
and that I was angered when my hope in them failed.
وماand not أناI ممَّنone of those who يُستَفَزُّis enticed بمطمعٍby a prospect of gain
فَيُخلِفُهُthen fails him منهfrom it الذيwhat كانhe was راجياhoping for
And I am not one enticed by the prospect of gain,
only to have his hopes of it disappointed.
ولكنّنىbut I أصفيتُI devoted قوماًcertain people مدائحىmy praises
فأصبحَso became ليfor me تقصيرُهُمtheir neglect بيَof me هاجياa satirist
But I devoted my praises to certain people,
so their neglect of me became my satirist.
فإنfor if كنتI am لاnot ألفَىI am found علىat المنعrefusal ساخِطاًresentful
كذلكlikewise لاnot أُلفَىI am found علىby البَذلِgenerosity راضِياpleased
For if I am not found resentful of refusal,
neither am I found pleased by generosity.
محاسِنُgood deeds ليof mine فيهمtoward them كثيرٌgreat عديدُهاtheir number
ولكنّهاbut they كانتwere لديهمin their eyes مساوياfaults
My good deeds toward them are many in number,
yet in their eyes they were faults.
تُقلِّدُهُمthey adorn them منfrom دُرِّpearls نحريmy throat قلائداًnecklaces
ولوand if شئتُI wished عادتthey would turn عنafter قَليلٍa short while أفاعِياvipers
They adorn them with necklaces of pearls from my throat,
and if I wished, these would soon turn into vipers.
ولوand if كنتُI had أنصَفتُI did justice to المدائحthe praises فيهمُof them
I would have made them للأكرمينَfor the noblest مراثياelegies
And had I done justice to my praises of them,
I would have made them elegies for the noblest.
