بأيِّin what بلادٍland غيرother than أرضيmy land أخَيِّمُI pitch my tent
وأىِّand what أُناسٍpeople غيرother than أهليmy kin أُيَمِّمُI turn toward
In what land other than my own shall I pitch my tent?
In what foreign lands could I pitch my tents
And toward what people other than my kin shall I turn?
And what strange people could I hope to befriend
ورائِيَbehind me أرضٌa land ماnot بهاin it مُتأخَّرٌa place to retreat
أمامِيَbefore me أرضٌa land ماnot بهاin it مُتقدَّمُa place to advance
Behind me lies a land with no place to retreat;
Behind me is a land where no one lags
Before me lies a land with no place to advance.
Ahead, a land where no one gets ahead
فهاso here أناI أختارُI choose النَّواءَdeparture علىover الثَّوَىstaying
ويكرهُهُand disapproves of it الرَّأىُjudgment الذىwhich هوit أحزَمُmore prudent
So here I am, choosing departure over staying,
So here I choose a life of solitude
Yet the more prudent judgment disapproves of it.
Though wiser minds would think me ill-advised
