Why has the world turned black, though no night has fallen?
Why has the world turned dark without any darkness?
And why have the horizons darkened, even the eastern skies?
Why have horizons darkened, even the east?
خَليليmy friend رَعاكَmay He guard you اللَّهGod قُلtell ليَme ماwhat الّذيthat which

My friend, may God protect you, tell me what is it

That has happened in this world, for you speak the truth
فَهَلso, has آنَthe time arrived خِلِّيmy friend للقِيامَةِfor the Resurrection وَقتهاits hour

Has the Resurrection's hour arrived, my friend,
Has it come time for resurrection, with the trumpet blown
with a blast upon the Trumpet, then someone falling senseless,
Then shock and raising of the dead, and gathering?
وَبَعثُand resurrection الوَرىmankind وَالحَشرُand the gathering ثَمَّthere وَإِنّهُand indeed it is so

and mankind's resurrection and the gathering there? Indeed,
I see the universe darkened, I see the sun not shining
all creatures stand before the Lord of the worlds.
I see the cold not breaking dawn or rising
أَرىI see الكَونَthe universe مُسوَدّاًblackened أَرىI see الشَّمسَthe sun لَمnot تَبِنْappear

I see the universe blackened; I see the sun has not appeared.
I see the stars of the horizon not rising
I see the cold has not cleared, nor is it radiant.
No forerunner appeared, nor any pursuer

And the stars of the horizon are not rising:
Where is the sky without this darkness? It cannot be seen
neither a latecomer nor a forerunner appears.
Even with staring hard and peering intently

Where is the sky, beyond the darkness? None can see it,
It has been removed or else it is veiled in darkness
though a lover strives with intent gaze and longing.
What is its affair? Tell me, for my chest is straitened
أَزالَتhas it vanished? وَإِلّاor else بِالظّلامِin darkness تَحَجَّبَتhas veiled itself

Has it vanished, or else veiled itself in darkness?
What is with me that I see the hills not as they were?
What is its plight? Tell me, for my breast is constricted.
How many a hill has collapsed and how many a lofty one knocked down

How many mountains have fallen, how many lofty peaks been crushed!
Never before ceasing in chirping and singing

What is with me that I see them not flying though they are
would a vocal creature fall silent from song and warbling?
As if their wings have been clipped, broken
وَماand why ليis it with me أَراهاI see them لاnot تَطيرُfly وَإِنَّهاand indeed they

Why do I see them not flying, though they,
What is the final news, my friend, that will cure me?
even if clipped of wing, still beat their wings?
For in talking to you I feel secure and certain

The best witnesses to a man's excellence are among mankind,
He preceded in authorship from the days of youth
and his renown among them accords with that.

His writings are exalted, and they are wondrous;
There is no discipline but he is its imam
fine subtleties dwell in them, grounded in exact inquiry.

And that he will win the lead if he competes
whether a truly sincere friend or a hypocritical friend.

Those you are pleased with are few
and that he wins precedence whenever he competes.

and in renown, just as his qualities were pleasing:
Raising harm, injury, his purpose is benefit

Removing injury and harm, and bringing benefit, was his way;
So he answered willingly, no barriers impeded him
throughout his days, people were safe from harm at his hands.
He strove seriously on his journey, longing pulling him

His God's summoner called him to the Gardens,
O how near is the goal for one eager and yearning
and he answered the call; no obstacles hindered him.
God's good pleasure led him towards it

He went, hastening his journey, longing for them;
How successful is one whose guide is God's good pleasure
how near the goal toward which a yearning man traveled!
He journeyed to Paradise, date it with his striving

how triumphant is one led by his Lord's good pleasure!

He journeyed earnestly to Paradise—record the date:
He will dwell with his Master, never to part
and gained immortality, accompanying the Prophet.
But we, because of him, were struck with an affliction

Glad tidings to him of the mighty triumph! For he
Its gravity is recognized by all people
dwells beside his Lord and does not depart.

Stand, you two: let us weep for him until the Resurrection, with tears
And descend like drizzle, gently raining
streaming from eyes that are perishing.
It is right for our hearts to be rent

Our hearts ought to be torn apart,
Witnessed in person, commands to custom contrary
and our livers—not the gussets of our shirts.

How many saintly wonders were witnessed from him at his death,
And at laying in the grave all heard him accurately
with one's own eyes, events defying the ordinary!
I wish we could ransom him and be his redemption

وَعِندَand upon نُزولِdescent into القبرِthe grave وَالنقلُand the report صادِقُtruthful
He uttered 'In the name of God' during the washing, making a bystander hear,
And that death had not come to him as fate inescapable
and when lowered into the grave—the report is true.
But my Lord decreed death as inescapable
فَياso oh لَيتَهُif only he يُفدىcould be ransomed وَكنّاand we were فِداءَهُhis ransom
وَأَنْand that لَمnot يَكُنhe be مِمّنamong those whom لَهُfor him المَوتُdeath لاحِقُovertakes
If only he could be ransomed, and we were his ransom,
And whoever possesses a soul must taste death
and he were not among those whom death overtakes!
Though he tasted death and the grave took him
وَلَكِنَّماbut بِالمَوتِdeath رَبِّيmy Lord قَدindeed قَضىdecreed
وَمَنand whoever كانَis ذاpossessed of نَفسٍa soul فَلِلمَوتِthen of death ذائِقُa taster
But my Lord has decreed death,
He continues alive forever brilliantly radiant
and everyone possessed of a soul must taste death.
He left famous repute and it remains
وَإِنْand even if كانَhas ذاقَtasted المَوتَdeath وَالقبرُand the grave حازهُenclosed him
فَماso not زالَceased حَيّalive الدّهرَthrough all time ماas long as بانَappeared شارِقُa rising sun
Though he has tasted death and the grave has enclosed him,
The most fragrant musk, scenting all existence
he remains alive for all time, as long as the rising sun appears.
Whoever lives in memory truly lives

For he left behind praiseworthy renown, and it
Whoever does not live in memory, he is fleeing
is pungently fragrant musk, filling the universe with scent.
He left us his eminent son, the formidable one
وَمَنand whoever عاشَlives ذكراًin remembrance فَهوَthen he is حيّalive حَقيقَةًtruly

Whoever lives on in remembrance is truly alive;
Whose superiority the people of knowledge unanimously recognized
whoever does not live on in remembrance is lost.

He left among us his son, the discerning master,
The discerning brother who none can match
whose excellence the men of learning all agree on.
He succeeded teaching and benefiting after him

Father of learning, master of understanding, an ocean of knowledge,
Succeeded suitably as rightful and deserving
a man of mastery, whom no adept comes close to.
He has produced every wondrous comprehension

He took the leading place in teaching and benefiting others after him,
Minds find accessing its ways difficult
taking the place of an equal, worthy and well-suited.
He came with what distinguished predecessors could not attain

He revealed every marvel of exact inquiry,
And how many successors he cannot be matched
whose paths prove elusive to thought.
Though he attained excellence from his father
وَجاءَand brought بِماwhat لَمnot تَستَطِعهُcould accomplish it أَوائِلٌpredecessors

He brought forth what earlier men could not accomplish;
He is its rightful heir and towering over it
how many a later man no predecessor can match!
No wonder, the son of a lion is a fierce lion cub
وَإِنand even if حازَobtained فَضلاًexcellence مِنfrom أَبيهِhis father فَإِنَّهُthen he
وَبُشراكُمand glad tidings to you سامٍrising عَلَيهِabove him وفائقُand surpassing
Though he acquired excellence from his father, he is—
No surprise, the son of warriors is a warrior
glad tidings to you!—rising above him and surpassing him.
O Master, the like of whom is little found
وَلاand no غَروَsurprise فَاِبنُfor the son of اللّيثِa lion لَيثُa lion غَضَنفَرٍa mighty lion
وَلاand no عَجبwonder فَاِبنُfor the son of البَواشِقِsparrowhawks باشِقُa sparrowhawk
No wonder: a lion's son is a lion, a mighty lion;
As the sun that has no match or anything to make it distinct
no marvel: the son of sparrowhawks is a sparrowhawk.
If you, our Master, suffered a calamity
فَياso O أَيّهاO المَولىmaster الّذيwhose قَلَّrare is مثلُهُhis like
فَكالشّمسِfor like the sun لاno مثلَpeer فَلاso no فَرقdifference فارِقُdistinguishing
O master, whose like is rare,
At its horror the separate ones’ hair turn white
like the sun, you have no peer; no difference sets you apart from it.
Remember the greatest calamity of the best of messengers
لَئِنif indeed كُنتَyou have مَولاناour master أَصبتَsuffered مُصيبَةًa calamity

If, our master, you have suffered a calamity,
Hardships seem small when you are distressed
at whose horror the partings of our hair turn gray,
Have patience, for patience best befits the noble one
تَذَكَّرrecall بِخَيرِwith the best of الرّسلِthe messengers أَعلىthe greatest مُصيبَةٍcalamity
يَقِلُّdiminishes لدَيكfor you الخطبُthe affliction إِذْwhen أَنتَyou ضائِقُdistressed
recall the greatest calamity: losing the best of messengers;
And your Lord overlooks the compensation owed by the speaker
your affliction will seem small when you are distressed.
In you, from the one you lost, is a brother of solace
وَصَبراًand patience فَإِنّfor indeed الصّبرَpatience أَليَقُmore fitting بِالفَتىfor a young man
وَعَنand in describing أَجرِهِits reward مَولايَmy master يَقصرُfalls short ناطِقُa speaker
Be patient, for patience better befits a man;
With whom people were pleased as his replacement
my master, no speaker can fully describe its reward.
I ask my Lord God to reward you excellently
وَفيكَand in you لَناfor us عَمّنfor the one whom أُصبتyou were afflicted أَخاO man of الحجىwisdom

In you, O man of wisdom, we have, for the one whose loss afflicted you,
And magnify it, for merit encompasses it
a successor whose qualities have been found pleasing.
To settle him in Paradise near his company
وَأَسأَلُand I ask ربّيmy Lord اللَّهَGod حُسنَgood عَزائِكمyour consolation
وَإِعظامهand His magnifying أَجراًa reward بِهِaround it الفضلُgrace حائِقُencompassing
I ask my Lord, God, to grant you good consolation,
Where for him towers are built with delights
and to increase your reward, encompassed by grace,
To water his grave with a rain of mercy
وَيُسكِنَهُand that He house him الفِردوسَParadise قُربَnear جِوارِهِHis presence
وَفيهِand in it لَهُfor him بالدّرِّof pearls تُبنىare built الجَواسِقُpalaces
and to lodge him in Paradise, near His presence,
Flooding it while he in it is drowning
where palaces of pearls are built for him,
As long as winds blow, pollinating
وَيَسقِيَand may water قَبراًa grave ضَمَّهُthat enclosed him غَيثُa rain of رَحمَةٍmercy
يُقَلِّبُturns about فيهwithin it وَهوَwhile he فيin ذاكthat غارِقُimmersed
and may a rain of mercy water the grave that holds him,
And lightning of bursts give rain in torrents
turning him within it, while he is immersed in that mercy,
So the son of Fathallah says, asking
مَدىthroughout الدّهرِtime ماas long as هَبَّتblow رِياحٌwinds لَواقِحٌfertilizing
وَماand as long as أمطَرَتrain غبّafter البروقِlightning flashes البَوارِقُflashing clouds
for all time, as long as fertilizing winds blow,
Why has the world turned dark without any darkness?
and flashing clouds rain after the lightning;
كَذاlikewise ماas long as اِبنُIbn, son of فَتحِFath اللَّهِAllah يَسأَلُasks قائِلاًsaying
لِمَwhy اِسوَدَّتturned black الدّنياthe world وَلَمand not يكُthere be غاسِقُa dark night
likewise, as long as Ibn Fath Allah asks, saying:
Why has the world turned black, though no night has fallen?
