ماذاwhat يخطُّwrites يَراعٌa reed pen ذابَhas melted مبرأُهits sharpened tip
ماذا يخطُّ يَراعٌ ذابَ مبرأُه
وكيفand how يقطعُcuts سيفٌa sword كلَّhas grown blunt فيthrough اللِّمَمِthe locks of hair
وكيف يقطعُ سيفٌ كلَّ في اللِّمَمِ
What can a reed pen write when its sharpened tip has melted?
What can a shepherd whose innocence is lost write
And how can a blunted sword cut through locks of hair?
And how can a sword surpass all when sharpened
فَقلتُso I said قائِلٌone who utters هَذاthis البيتَthe verse ذوpossessed of عَتَهٍfeeble-mindedness
فَقلتُ قائِلٌ هَذا البيتَ ذو عَتَهٍ
وَالسرُّand the secret فيin الزّندِthe wrist لاnot فيin السّيفِthe sword وَالقَلمِand the pen
وَالسرُّ في الزّندِ لا في السّيفِ وَالقَلمِ
So I said: The speaker of this verse is witless;
So I said, this verse has its own flaws
And the secret lies in the wrist, not in the sword or the pen.
And the secret lies in the flint, not in the sword or the pen
