This is the age we used to dread,

and feared we would live to see its black days.

We have reached it, and recount it without doubt,

in the words of Kaʿb and in the words of Ibn Masʿūd:

an age in which we see goodness wholly rejected,

and every door to it appears barred.

And truth, like goodness, we do not accept in it,

and evil, like injustice, is not rejected in it.

If this endures and nothing comes to replace it,

its horrors will increase without limit.

And if the hearts of humankind remain divided,

no one will weep for the dead or rejoice over a newborn.
