ذا الكَلبُ مِن مشرعِ البُهتانِ قَد وَلَغا

ذا الكَلبُ مِن مشرعِ البُهتانِ قَد وَلَغا

وَأَكثَر الزور في بُهتانِهِ وَلغا

وَأَكثَر الزور في بُهتانِهِ وَلغا

This dog has lapped from the watering place of slander,

and multiplied falsehood in his slander and babbled.

أَحيا الفَسادَ بِبيروت وَأَفسَدها

أَحيا الفَسادَ بِبيروت وَأَفسَدها

بَعدَ الصّلاحِ وَفيها قَد بَغى وَطَغى

بَعدَ الصّلاحِ وَفيها قَد بَغى وَطَغى

He revived corruption in Beirut and corrupted it,

after its good order; there he oppressed and transgressed,

بِعُصبَةٍ مِن فسادٍ كانَ مَولِدهم

بِعُصبَةٍ مِن فسادٍ كانَ مَولِدهم

مِن كلِّ عاثٍ بِإِفراطِ الفَسادِ بَغى

مِن كلِّ عاثٍ بِإِفراطِ الفَسادِ بَغى

with a band whose birth was from corruption,

of every ravager who transgressed through excessive corruption,

وَزاعِم أَنّه أَهل الصّلاح وَما

وَزاعِم أَنّه أَهل الصّلاح وَما

لِغَيرِ درّك اِسمهُ في الدّهرِ قَد بَلغا

لِغَيرِ درّك اِسمهُ في الدّهرِ قَد بَلغا

and one who claims to be righteous, yet

he has attained nothing in life beyond knowing his own name.

كَذاكَ مِن كلِّ شَيطان تَمرّده

كَذاكَ مِن كلِّ شَيطان تَمرّده

أَدّاهُ بِالجهلِ أَنْ بَينَ الوَرى نَزَغا

أَدّاهُ بِالجهلِ أَنْ بَينَ الوَرى نَزَغا

Likewise, of every devil whose rebellion

led him, through ignorance, to sow discord among humankind;

وَمَن تَبَدّى يُريكَ الحبّ ظاهره

وَمَن تَبَدّى يُريكَ الحبّ ظاهره

وَقَلبه بِقَويِّ البغضِ قَد دبغا

وَقَلبه بِقَويِّ البغضِ قَد دبغا

and one who appears, his outward self showing you love,

while his heart has been tanned with fierce hatred.

لَهُ النّفاقُ رِداءٌ قَد أَحاطَ بِهِ

لَهُ النّفاقُ رِداءٌ قَد أَحاطَ بِهِ

نَسيجُ كذب وَبِالبُهتانِ قَد صبغا

نَسيجُ كذب وَبِالبُهتانِ قَد صبغا

Hypocrisy is his cloak, wrapped around him,

a fabric of lies, dyed with slander.

مِن كلِّ كَلبٍ عَقورٍ بِالفَسادِ سَطا

مِن كلِّ كَلبٍ عَقورٍ بِالفَسادِ سَطا

وَكلّ أَرقم بِالإِفسادِ قد لدغا

وَكلّ أَرقم بِالإِفسادِ قد لدغا

Of every vicious dog that lashed out with corruption,

and every speckled serpent that bit with corruption;

وَكلّ مَن قَد تَمادى في مَفاسِدِهِ

وَكلّ مَن قَد تَمادى في مَفاسِدِهِ

وَدرع إِفسادِهِ لِلشرِّ قَد سبغا

وَدرع إِفسادِهِ لِلشرِّ قَد سبغا

and everyone who went ever further in his misdeeds,

and whose armor of corruption has grown ample for evil.

قَومٌ أَطاعوا حُظوظَ النّفسِ إِذ رَكِبوا

قَومٌ أَطاعوا حُظوظَ النّفسِ إِذ رَكِبوا

خَيل الفَسادِ وَقالوا اليومَ يَوم وَغى

خَيل الفَسادِ وَقالوا اليومَ يَوم وَغى

A people who obeyed the self's desires when they mounted

the horses of corruption and said, "Today is a day of battle."

كَبيرُهم ذلِك الكلب العَقور غَدا

كَبيرُهم ذلِك الكلب العَقور غَدا

شَيخَ الفَسادِ إِلى أَهلِ الفَسادِ صغى

شَيخَ الفَسادِ إِلى أَهلِ الفَسادِ صغى

Their chief, that vicious dog, became

the sheikh of corruption; he inclined toward the corrupt.

حُبُّ الرّياسَةِ قَد أَعمى بَصيرتهُ

حُبُّ الرّياسَةِ قَد أَعمى بَصيرتهُ

وَقَد تَمادى بِهِ حَتّى طَغى وَبَغا

وَقَد تَمادى بِهِ حَتّى طَغى وَبَغا

Love of leadership has blinded his inner sight,

and carried him ever further until he transgressed and oppressed.

نمرٌ مِنَ الجَهلِ قَد أَبدى مَفاسِدهُ

نمرٌ مِنَ الجَهلِ قَد أَبدى مَفاسِدهُ

جَهراً وَأَزبَدَ في إِفسادِهِ وَرغا

جَهراً وَأَزبَدَ في إِفسادِهِ وَرغا

Nimr, out of ignorance, has displayed his misdeeds

openly; in his corruption he foamed and bellowed.

يَفنى الزّمانُ وَلا تَفنى مَفاسِدُهُ

يَفنى الزّمانُ وَلا تَفنى مَفاسِدُهُ

فيها لَقَد دامَ مَشغولاً وَما فَرغا

فيها لَقَد دامَ مَشغولاً وَما فَرغا

Time will perish, but his misdeeds will not perish;

he has indeed stayed busy with them and never found respite.

وَقَد أَطاعوهُ مِن حَيثُ اِستَخَفَّهُم

وَقَد أَطاعوهُ مِن حَيثُ اِستَخَفَّهُم

وَبَلّغوه الَّذي قَد رامَهُ وَلغا

وَبَلّغوه الَّذي قَد رامَهُ وَلغا

And they obeyed him because he had duped them,

and brought him to what he had sought, and he babbled.

يا ربّ مِنهُم فَطَهِّرْ كلَّ بَلدَتِنا

يا ربّ مِنهُم فَطَهِّرْ كلَّ بَلدَتِنا

أَفشِ الرّدى فيهمُ يا ربّ وَالوتغا

أَفشِ الرّدى فيهمُ يا ربّ وَالوتغا

O Lord, cleanse our whole town of them;

spread death and ruin among them, O Lord.
