تَعَجّبواthey marveled مِنهُat him وَالصّهباءُand the tawny wine تَغلِبُهُoverpowers him
تَعَجّبوا مِنهُ وَالصّهباءُ تَغلِبُهُ
قالواthey said لِماذاwhy نَراهُwe see him الدّهرَall the time سَكراناdrunk
قالوا لِماذا نَراهُ الدّهرَ سَكرانا
They marveled at him as tawny wine overpowered him.
They wondered about him, while the alcohol overpowered him
They said, “Why do we always see him drunk?”
They said “Why do we always see him drunk?”
فَقُلتso I said مِنbecause of شُربِهِhis drinking صَهباءtawny wine ريقَتِهِhis saliva
فَقُلت مِن شُربِهِ صَهباء ريقَتِهِ
دَوماًunceasingly فَلاso no عَجبwonder إِنif دامَhe remains نَشواناintoxicated
دَوماً فَلا عَجب إِن دامَ نَشوانا
So I said, “Because he drinks the tawny wine of his saliva
So I said “It’s from drinking the saliva of his beloved -
unceasingly—so no wonder if he remains intoxicated.”
No wonder he is ever joyful and elated!”
