عابوا عَلَيها حُمرةً في شَعرِها
مِنfrom غَيرِlack of علمٍknowledge وَالدّليلand the evidence يكذِّبُrefutes
مِن غَيرِ علمٍ وَالدّليل يكذِّبُ
They faulted her for the redness in her hair,
They faulted her for a redness in her hair,
In ignorance—yet the evidence gives them the lie:
Without knowledge, though the evidence refutes them.
سَفَكَتshed لَواحِظهاher glances دَماءَblood مُحبِّهاher lover
سَفَكَت لَواحِظها دَماءَ مُحبِّها
فَبِهاso with it يُيَرْنَأُis henna-tinted شَعرهاher hair ويخضَّبُand is dyed
فَبِها يُيَرْنَأُ شَعرها ويخضَّبُ
Her glances spilled her lover’s blood,
Her glances shed her lover’s blood;
And with it her hair is stained and dyed.
So with it her hair is henna-tinted and dyed.
