بَداappeared فيin خدّهِhis cheek مِسكُmusk العِذارِthe cheek-down
فخِلْتُso I imagined الليلَthe night يَسريtravels فيin النّهارِthe day
The musk of cheek-down appeared upon his cheek,
Musk began to show on his cheek,
so I imagined night passing through day.
So I spent the night wandering in daylight,
ولاحَand shone بوجهِهِon his face أقْمارُmoons of حُسْنٍbeauty
تَحِلُّare released عَنِfrom التكتُّمconcealment والسِّرارِand secrecy
And moons of beauty shone upon his face,
And moons of beauty appeared on his face,
released from concealment and secrecy.
Free from concealment and secrecy.
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle لاحَhe appears يَسطوhe strikes فيin جُفونٍeyelids
فماso there is nothing للأُسْدِfor the lions منهُfrom him سوىexcept الفِرارِflight
Whenever he appears, he strikes with his eyelids,
When he glanced, he cast down eyes,
so lions have no course but to flee from him.
So that even lions had no choice but to flee before him.
عَجِبْتُI marveled لِلَحْظِهِat his glance إِذْwhen نالَit won نَصْراًvictory
بِضَعْفٍthrough weakness فيin الجُفونِthe eyelids معَwith اِنْكِسارِlanguor
I marveled at his glance when it won a victory
I marveled at his fortune when with but a glance
through weakness in the eyelids and their languor.
From lowered lids and bent posture he gained victory.
يَميلُhe sways بِقامَةٍwith a figure هَيفاءَslender تيهاًproudly
فَيَطْعَنُنيso he pierces me بِقَلبيin my heart المُستَطارِdistraught
He sways proudly with a slender figure,
He sways with a slender, bending figure,
and pierces me in my distraught heart.
So my susceptible heart is pierced by him.
مَليحٌa beauty باتَhas come to يأنَفُdisdain وَصْلَunion with حِبٍّa lover

وظَبيٌand a gazelle باتَhas come to يألَفُgrow fond للنِّفارِof fleeing
A beauty who has come to scorn union with a lover,
A beauty who disdained the love of a lover,
and a gazelle who has grown fond of shying away.
And a gazelle who was accustomed to fleeing.

كَسانيclothed me جفْنُهُhis eyelid ثَوْبَa robe of اِصْفِرارِyellow pallor
Tender, with downcast glances and gaze,
My eyes were hurt by his coquettish glances and eyes
his eyelid clothed me in a robe of yellow pallor.
Which clothed my eyelids in yellow robes.
فَوَجنَتُهُso his cheek قرارُthe abode of الوَرْدِroses أضْحَتْhas become
فَبيso with myself أَفْديI ransom لِذيّاكَfor that very القَرارِabode
His cheek has thus become the abode of roses,
His cheeks became the abode of roses,
so I would ransom that very abode with myself.
So I ransomed myself for the sake of those cheeks.
وَشامَتُهُand his beauty mark تَفوحُexhales نِجارَthe essence of عِطْرٍperfume

And his beauty mark exhales the essence of perfume;
His mouth exhales the perfume of blossoms
through it we recount fragrance on al-Bukhari's authority.
With which I scent perfumes instead of aloes wood.

He has a waist slender without illness,
He had a waist, delicate without weakness,
with a girdle that became like a bracelet;
With a belt that became like bracelets.

and a body that shone in a green garment,
And a body that shone in green raiment
appearing beneath it like pure gold;
That made what was beneath it seem freshly plucked.
وَثَغْراًand a mouth إِنif تَبَسَّمَit smiled عَنto reveal لآلٍpearls

and a mouth that, when it smiled to reveal pearls,
And a mouth - if it smiled revealing teeth
showed strung pearls along with scattered ones.
Pearls and corals appeared from it.
نَشَقتI inhaled خِمارَهُhis veil فغَدَوْتُso I became سَكراًdrunk

I inhaled his veil's scent and became drunk,
When he lifted his veil I became intoxicated
intoxicated by it, from breathing in the veil.
With the raising of the veil and its rending.
بِروحيwith my soul لَيلةًa night قَدindeed زارَhe visited فيهاin it
فَأَحْياso he revived مَيْتَdead قَلبيmy heart بِالمزارِby the visit
My soul be ransom for a night in which he visited,
One night he visited and revived
and revived my dead heart by his visit.
My dead heart by his visit to my tomb.
وَسامَرَنيand conversed with me by night بِعَذبٍwith sweetness مِنof كَلامٍspeech
فَطالَso grew long قَصيرُthe brief span of عُمريmy life بِالسّمارِthrough nighttime companionship
And he spoke with me by night in sweet words,
He conversed with me sweetly with words
so my brief life grew long through nighttime companionship.
So my short life was prolonged rapturously.
وَبِتْناand we spent the night وَالعِناقُand the embrace يضُمُّناenfolds us فيin
ظَلامِthe darkness of اللّيلِthe night مِنْfrom غَيرِother than اِسْتِتارِconcealment
And we spent the night, our embrace enfolding us in
We spent the night in each other's arms
the darkness of night, without concealment.
In the darkness of night without concealment.
وَباتَand he spent the night مَوَسّداًpillowed on يُمْنايَmy right arm ضَمّاًin an embrace
وَلَمْand did not أَبخُلْI begrudge عَلَيهِto him بِاليَسارِwith the left arm
And he spent the night pillowed on my right arm, held close,
He lay the whole night coddling me,
and I did not begrudge him my left arm,
While I was not miserly with my left hand.

until the eastern dawn breathed out perfume,
Until the dawn breathed its perfume in the east,
its fragrance surpassing the scent of arar blossoms.
Its scent exceeding the diffusion of perfumes.
وَلاحَand shone كَأَنَّهُas though it وَاللّيلُand the night داجٍdark

مَنازِلُthe dwellings of سَيّدٍa lord عاليlofty المَنارِthe beacon
And it shone, as though, while night was dark,
It appeared as if he and the night were homes
it were the dwellings of a lord whose beacon stood high:
Of a noble man, lofty of minaret.
إِمامٌan imam قَدindeed عَلاhas risen عِزّاًin honor وفَخراًand glory

وَحازَand attained بِمَجدِهِthrough his glory كلَّevery اِفْتِخارِdistinction
an imam who has risen in honor and glory,
An imam who attained glory and pride
and through his greatness has attained every distinction.
And gained complete honor with his glory.
مَلاذٌa refuge فيamong الوَرىhumankind وَالدّهرِand time حِصْنٌa fortress
وَمِحْسانٌand a great benefactor مُقيلٌa pardoner لِلعِثارِof missteps
A refuge among humankind, a fortress through time,
In the world and time a refuge, a fortress,
and a great benefactor who pardons missteps;
A kind patron to the fallen.
وَشَمسٌand a sun فيin سَماءِthe sky of العزِّhonor بادٍappearing
وَبَدْرٌand a full moon فيin سَماءِthe sky of الفَضْلِexcellence جارِcoursing
and a sun appearing in the sky of honor,
A sun in the sky of might, a moon
and a full moon coursing in the sky of excellence.
Shining in the sky of virtue.
لَهُfor him الرَّحمنُthe All-Merciful مِنْwhat a مَولىًlord شَريفٍnoble
تَوشّحَhas donned جسمهُhis body ثَوبthe robe of الوَقارِdignity
May the All-Merciful be with him—what a noble lord,
For him, from a noble lord, the All-Merciful
whose body has donned the robe of dignity!
Adorned his body with the garb of dignity.
بِهِthrough him العَلياءُeminence قدindeed رُفِعَتْwas raised فَجَرّتْand then trailed

Through him eminence was raised, and trailed,
Through him the lofty were raised high, flowing
soon after abasement, the skirts of glory.
Far from the skirts of disgrace.
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle أَطْنَبَspeak at length المُدّاحُthe panegyrists فيهِabout him
فَقَدْthen indeed جاؤواthey have brought بِغايَةِwith the utmost الاِختِصارِbrevity
Whenever panegyrists praise him at length,
When the eulogist is long in praise of him
they have offered only the utmost brevity.
They have achieved the utmost concision.
فَياso O أَمنَthe safeguard of الحشاthe heart مِنْfrom كُلِّevery خَوفٍfear
وَفَكّاكَand liberator of الأَسيرِthe captive مِنَfrom الإسارِbondage
So, O safeguard of the heart from every fear,
So O you who brings security to those in fear
and liberator of the captive from bondage,
And frees the captive from fetters
وَياand O مَنْyou who فيin بُحورِthe seas of أكُفِّهِhis palms قَدْindeed
غَدَوْناwe have become والمُنىand hopes مثْلlike الجَواريships
and O you, in the seas of whose palms we have
O you in whose oceans of palms
become, with our hopes, like ships,
We have become as if grasped by the new moon.
فَهاكَso take رَعاكَmay He protect you ربّيmy Lord بِنتَa daughter of فِكْرٍthought
بِهاover it فيin مَدْحِكمyour praise طالَgrew long اِفْتكاريmy reflection
so take—may my Lord protect you—a daughter of thought,
Prolonged in my eulogizing of you.
for which I pondered long in praise of you.
If the stars knew the fashioning of my verse
فَلَوfor if عَلِمَknew النّجومُthe stars مُصاغَthe crafting of نَظميmy verse
بِتَمْداحيin my praise لِذاتِكَof your person معtogether with نِثاريmy prose
For if the stars knew how my verse is wrought,
In my praising of you and my strewing of verse,
in my praise of your person, together with my prose,
They would immediately fall upon us
لحالاًthen at once والمُنىand hopes سَقَطَتْwould fall عَليناupon us
لتنظمَto be strung فيin مديحكُمyour praise الدّراريthe brilliant stars
they and our hopes would at once fall upon us,
To string themselves into a necklace in your praise.
so the brilliant stars might be strung into your praise.
So accept graciously the product of my mind
فَقابِلْso receive بِالقَبولِwith acceptance لِبنتِfor the daughter of فِكريmy thought
وَلاand do not تَسمَعْlisten لمَنْto whoever فيهاabout it يُماريquibbles
So meet the daughter of my thought with acceptance,
And do not listen to those who find fault therein.
and do not listen to anyone who quibbles over it.
Show favor upon it beyond what is deserved
وَأَقْبِلْand turn بِالرِّضىwith approval فَضْلاًas a favor عَلَيهاtoward it

And turn toward it with approval, as a gracious favor,
And dress its faults in the garb of concealment.
and clothe its flaw in a robe of concealment.
Keep your high rank and unmatched glory,
وَدُمْand endure وَاِسلَمْand remain safe بِعزٍّin honor لاnot يُضاهىis equaled
وفخْرٍand glory ماas long as بَدَتْappears شمسُthe sun of النّهارِday
And endure, and remain safe in unrivaled honor,
Not reached by the sun of day
and glory, as long as the sun of day appears,
Nor stirred by the branches of acacia trees
وَماand as long as هَزَّتْshakes غُصونُthe boughs of البانِban trees ريحٌa wind
فَأَغْنَتْthus sufficed عَنin place of تَغارِيدِthe warblings of الهَزارِthe nightingale
and as long as a wind shakes the boughs of ban trees,
To dispense with the warbling of singers.
thus taking the place of the nightingale's songs.
