The mouth is daisies, with the finest vintage and wine within.

And the cheek is like a garden, with roses and apples.

And the cheek is a sun that has appeared, shining by day.

And the face, like a full moon, has shone above all charms.

And the forelock rises over the brow, captivating.

How lovely a night in which a lamp shines brightly!

And the glance is a sword I see gleaming at dawn.

How many minds it has stolen, how many souls it has plundered!

And the mole is like musk, resting on a cheek's rose.

How fragrant the roses and apples with the scent of your musk!

And the neck is a radiant pillar of light.

Glory to heaven's Creator, who cleaves the dawn!

And the figure, like a spear, sways like a slender bān branch.

How many a branch, swayed by the hand of the winds, it has shamed!

And love is like a blaze dwelling in a yearning lover's heart.

If you take it as your measure, you will see Hell as a shallow pool.

O spirit of hearts, and O life of souls!

You have destroyed a tormented lover who has wandered because of separation.

And water is life—and how many people it has killed:

Those who cannot swim in it, and those who can.

I have hidden my passion and do not speak openly of my love.

But my wasting has proclaimed it and laid it bare.

In my love-madness I go toward passion, morning and evening.

How sincere the lover who goes forth for love of you, at morn or eve!

By night, sleeplessness; and by day, love-madness.

This is a wretched state; could he rest, he would find relief.

Why does my reproacher blame me, when he is free of love?

May no reproacher who blames me for you live, nor any censurer!

Do not listen to reproach, nor obey a reproacher.

For reproach is harmful, and whoever blames is like a blister beetle.

And union is praiseworthy, and happy is the one you join.

And for the passionate lover, nearness is life and restoration.

And abandonment is deadly, and whoever you forsake lies slain.

And distance is torment, filled with worries and sorrows.

O full moon of beauty, you have made me like a toothpick!

Bestow union upon one who has fallen through your desertion.

O slender bān branch, you have never had an equal—

Yet how many bend you—the breeze and the winds!

I would ransom you with my soul, my new wealth and my inheritance.

Even if a lover grudged his soul, he would give it freely for you.

And be safe, and live for all time in the most glorious beauty,

In the essence of beauty and in garments of joy,

As long as doves lament on the pulpits of spreading trees,

As long as the nightingale mounts the branches at dawn and sings out,

As long as a breeze blows, and drunkenly carouses

A boon companion in love, over the finest vintage and wine.
