أَثنى سِواك الحبيب مُمتَدحاً

أَثنى سِواك الحبيب مُمتَدحاً

لِثَغرِ حَبيبي بِطيبِ أَنفاسِ

لِثَغرِ حَبيبي بِطيبِ أَنفاسِ

The beloved’s toothstick offered admiring praise

My friend praised someone else besides you,

To my beloved’s mouth for the sweetness of its breath.

Praising the lips of my beloved with sweet breath,

فَقالَ فَضلٌ عَليَّ صارَ لَهُ

فَقالَ فَضلٌ عَليَّ صارَ لَهُ

أَما تَرى فَضلَهُ عَلى راسي

أَما تَرى فَضلَهُ عَلى راسي

Then it said, “I now owe him a debt of gratitude;

So he said he's better than me, that became his,

Do you not see his favor upon my head?”

Don't you see his superiority over my head
