النُّطقُspeech فَخٌّa snare وَقَلَّand is scant النّفعُbenefit فيهin it لناfor us
النُّطقُ فَخٌّ وَقَلَّ النّفعُ فيه لنا
وَالصَّمتُand silence فيهin it كمالُperfection العقلِof reason والأدبِand of good manners
وَالصَّمتُ فيه كمالُ العقلِ والأدبِ
Speech is a snare, and its benefit to us is scant.
Speech is a trap, and little benefit lies therein for us,
And in silence lies the perfection of reason and good manners.
While in silence is the height of reason and courtesy.
فَإِنْso if يكُis النُّطقُspeech ثَوباًa garment حِيكَwas woven مِنof وَرقٍsilver
فَإِنْ يكُ النُّطقُ ثَوباً حِيكَ مِن وَرقٍ
فَالصَّمتُthen silence عِنديin my view ثوبٌa garment حِيكwas woven منof ذَهبِgold
فَالصَّمتُ عِندي ثوبٌ حِيك من ذَهبِ
So if speech is a garment woven of silver,
If speech is a garment woven of leaves,
Then silence, to me, is a garment woven of gold.
Then silence for me is a garment woven of gold.
