مَديحِيَmy praise مَنone who يُهجَىis satirized وَلَمand not (past negation) يَكُbe أَهلَهworthy of it
مَديحِيَ مَن يُهجَى وَلَم يَكُ أَهلَه
فَذاكَthen that لَعينُindeed the very essence الهَجوِof satire فيهِin him تَحَوَّلاhas turned
فَذاكَ لَعينُ الهَجوِ فيهِ تَحَوَّلا
My praise of one who is satirized and was not worthy of it—
That has turned into the very essence of satire against him.
كَأَرضٍlike soil بِهاin it البطّيخُthe watermelon لَوif قَدhad (past marker) زَرعتهyou planted it
كَأَرضٍ بِها البطّيخُ لَو قَد زَرعته
يَصيرُturns into بِهاin it البطّيخُthe watermelon لاno شَكّdoubt حَنظَلاcolocynth (bitter apple)
يَصيرُ بِها البطّيخُ لا شَكّ حَنظَلا
Like soil where, if you planted watermelon,
The watermelon would surely turn into bitter colocynth.
