قيلَ الزُّمرُّدُ في الياقوتِ لَيسَ لَهُ
غَوْصٌa plunge وَمَنand whoever قالَsaid عَنaway from سُبْلِpaths الهُدىguidance حاصاstrayed
غَوْصٌ وَمَن قالَ عَن سُبْلِ الهُدى حاصا
It was said: 'Into the ruby, the emerald cannot
The emerald in the ruby has no depth
plunge'; and whoever said so strayed from the paths of guidance.
And whoever strays from the path of guidance errs
فَلَوfor if رَأىhe saw خدَّcheek حِبّيmy beloved والعِذارُand the down along the cheek بهupon it
فَلَو رَأى خدَّ حِبّي والعِذارُ به
رَأىhe saw الزُّمرُّدَthe emerald فيinto الياقوتِthe ruby قَدalready غاصَاplunged
رَأى الزُّمرُّدَ في الياقوتِ قَد غاصَا
For had he seen my beloved's cheek, with the down upon it,
If only he saw the cheek of my beloved and the coquetry in it
He would have seen the emerald already plunged into the ruby.
He would see the emerald diving deep in the ruby
