If a man's honor is not stained by baseness,

Then he is noble of soul and wellborn.

And though he wears rags, while his honor stays white,

Every robe he wears is beautiful.

And none is noble of soul save one who bears much—

Yet high distinction decrees that champions be few.

I said to her, 'Indeed, the noble are few.'

Young men who have risen toward the heights, and elders.

Impregnable, sending the gaze back weary.

Towers where the suns of glory lodge.

A long, unreachable bough toward the star.

And among us generation after generation takes pride in it.

Even when Amir and Salul deem it so?

And love of death has never departed from us.

While their life-spans hate it and thus grow long.

Was a timely descent into the noblest wombs.

But one pouring heavy rain, raining abundantly.

And we incline toward speaking what is right.

Ready to speak as the noble speak, and ready to act.

No fire of ours has died out before a nighttime visitor,

Nor has it ever ceased to guide guests.

Nothing is on people's tongues but praise of us,

And no guest among those who lodge has ever reviled us.

    لِشُهرتها في وَصفِها لا نُطيلُ

    Our days against our enemy are renowned;

So famous are they, we do not dwell on their description.

    لَها غُرَرٌ مَعلومَةٌ وحجولُ

    Black for them, but white for us, they shone;

They bear well-known forehead-blazes and white stockings.

And our swords, in every east and west,

Strike with a force that sends minds flying.

They bear notches from clashing with armored men.

Along their edge the water of death flows—

And then sheathed before a victim is slain.

As a companion of the blade's edge asks, ever inquisitive.

For the learned and the ignorant are not alike.

Guides to winning the heights, showing the way.

    تَدورُ رَحاهُم حَولَهُ وَتَجولُ

    And the sons of Fath Allah are the pivot of their following;

Around it their millstone turns and revolves.
