بَكَيتُ دَماً مِن فَرطِ هِجرانِ فاتِنِي

بَكَيتُ دَماً مِن فَرطِ هِجرانِ فاتِنِي

وَمِن كَونِهِ مِنِّي يَفِرُّ وَيَأنفُ

وَمِن كَونِهِ مِنِّي يَفِرُّ وَيَأنفُ

I wept blood from the severity of my charmer's abandonment,

I wept blood from the intensity of my beloved's abandonment

and because he flees from me and turns up his nose.

And from her disdain and aversion towards me

وَلَيسَ رُعافُ المَرءِ مِن غَيرِ أَنفِهِ

وَلَيسَ رُعافُ المَرءِ مِن غَيرِ أَنفِهِ

وَلَكِنّني مِن مُقلَتي كنتُ أَرعفُ

وَلَكِنّني مِن مُقلَتي كنتُ أَرعفُ

And a person's nosebleed comes only from their nose,

Yet a man's snot does not come from anything but his nose

but I was bleeding from my eye.

Rather it was from my love-sickness that I shed tears
