أُراقِبI watch النّجمَthe star طولَthe whole length of اللَّيلthe night مِنfrom وَلَهيmy lovesick yearning
أُراقِب النّجمَ طولَ اللَّيل مِن وَلَهي
حَتّىuntil جَهِلتُI no longer knew الكَرىslumber فيin كلِّall أَوقاتيmy hours
حَتّى جَهِلتُ الكَرى في كلِّ أَوقاتي
I watch the star all night long in my lovesick yearning,
I gaze upon the star all through the night enthralled
Until I no longer know slumber at any hour.
Until I lose all sense of time, unaware, appalled
فَهَلso, can ...? أَنامُI sleep بِلَيلٍat night وَالنّجومُand the stars لهاfor them
فَهَل أَنامُ بِلَيلٍ وَالنّجومُ لها
فيin مُقلتيَّmy two eyes شعاعٌa radiance كالمسَلّاتِlike needles
في مُقلتيَّ شعاعٌ كالمسَلّاتِ
How, then, can I sleep at night, when the stars have
Shall I then sleep at night whilst stars their beams unfurl
In my eyes a radiance like needles?
And pierce my eyelids with their rays like swords uncurled
