أَراهُI see him بِالعِذارِwith cheek-down يَزيدُincreases حُسناًin beauty
وَلَستُand I am not أَراهI see him يَنقصdiminishes بالعذارِby cheek-down
I see him grow more handsome with cheek-down,
Nor do I see his beauty lessened by that down.
أَماas for الحَسناءُthe beautiful woman سالِفهاher sidelock لَهاfor her قَدmay
يُحسِّنenhances حُسنَهاher beauty مثلَlike الخمارِthe veil
As for the fair woman, her sidelock may
Enhance her beauty, like a veil.
وَسالِفُهاand her sidelock فَشَيءٌso, a thing مَستعارborrowed
وَلَيسَand is not عِذارُهhis cheek-down بِالمُستَعارِat all borrowed
Yet her sidelock is a borrowed thing,
While his cheek-down is not borrowed.
