    I have no desire to gain anything but high honors.

    The man of lordship is content with high honors.

    I turn my attention toward nothing but noble deeds.

    I lend my ear to nothing but glorious achievements.

    My only workaday robe is loftiness,

    And glory is my adornment when I am brought low.

    I venture into hardships; I cannot endure humiliation.

    The son of noble men drinks deeply of hardships.

    بِالذُّلِّ في الجنّاتِ لا أَتَمتّعُ

    My nature refuses paradise on terms of humiliation;

    In abasement, I take no pleasure in its gardens.

    Were it not the abode of dignity, it would not be

    Praiseworthy, a place toward which desire aspires.

    Sweet to me, when free of humiliation

    And abasement, is the barren wilderness.

    بَل إِنّني الكُرمُ الصّبيحُ الأنزَعُ

    I am neither hairy-browed nor one of mankind's base;

    Rather, I am noble, fair-faced, with temples clear of hair.

    لَولا الكَرامَةُ لَستُ مِمَّن يُخدَعُ

    If I am deceived, I am deceived willingly and knowingly;

    But for magnanimity, I am not one to be deceived.

    يَسري بِها ماءُ الحَياةِ وَيَلمَعُ

    Beauty was inscribed upon my cheeks as a mark of grace;

    Through it the water of life flows and gleams.

    مِنها الفِراسَةُ نورُها يَتَشعشَعُ

    The radiance of distinction rises upon my face;

    From it the light of discernment shines forth.

    Indeed, I have laid down the breast of the graces,

    And in the lap of eminence I was reared and grew.

    وَعَلى رِقابِ العِزِّ أُحمَلُ أُرفَعُ

    I was pillowed on glory's bedding, upon its throne;

    Upon the necks of honor I am borne and raised.

    No star of rank is in the heaven of honor

    But the loftiest of the lofty has drawn near me.

    هَيهاتِ إنّي لِلمَعالي أَخضعُ

    As for me, I never loved the beauty of high honors;

    Far be it that I should bow to high honors!

    Rather, I was their beloved, and it was as though they

    Had become fashioned for loving and adoring me.

    I have indeed grasped the Pleiades in my hand

    And made them my sandal, which I never remove.

    زردُ الشّجاعَةِ في الوغى يَتَدرَّعُ

    I am a man whose armor is the mail of awe;

    He dons courage's rings of mail amid the fray.

    تَحجو الطريق مِنَ الوقارِ تزعزعُ

    He walks gently, adorned with dignity;

    You would think the road trembled from his solemn bearing.

    وَأَخو السّيادَةِ مَن يَضُرُّ وَيَنفَعُ

    My hand is for the noble, my sword for foes;

    The man of lordship is he who harms and helps.

    وَاِبنُ النباهَةِ مَن يُذِلُّ ويَرفعُ

    I protect the noble and humble the base;

    The man of distinction is he who humbles and exalts.

    طَرَبي بِصَوتِ البيضِ حتّى تَقَعقعُ

    I have never thrilled to lute-strings or to song;

    My rapture is in white swords' voices as they clash.

    When I draw a polished blade from the cutting swords,

    I slay the lion with my blade and lay him low.

    When I brandish a sharp blade among the keen swords,

    Heads fall before my hands and bow.

    When I couch a brown shaft from among the spears,

    Hearts emerge from breasts and are torn out.

    I drove lions across the fields of battle,

    Like ewes that see wolves and take fright.

    Not by guile did I subdue the lions of al-Shara,

    Imitating Qusayr when he cut off his nose.

    وَأَخو الجَبانَةِ مَنْ يَغول ويخدعُ

    I come face to face, declaring myself for single combat;

    The coward is he who assails by stealth and deceives.

    I plunged into battle astride a swimming sea,

    Galloping over the back of the winds and speeding on.

    If the lions of battle caught a breath of his,

    Their innards and ribs would be torn apart by it.

    If I sought to strike the stars with my sharp blade,

    On his back I would reach whatever I seek and desire.

    Were I blazing stars, I would not accept my stations

    Being placed in the fourth of the celestial spheres.

    وَأَرى الغروبَ نَقيصَةً لا تتبعُ

    I would never consent to setting in a western horizon;

    I deem setting a fault not to be imitated.

    For my glory I accept no dome but one

    Of the starless celestial sphere, within which I rise.

    Had I lived in the days of those kings

    Who passed away, they would have grown and matured among my servants.

    Indeed, among the slaves in my service would have been

    Kisra, Caesar, al-Rabi', and Tubba'.

    Yet I am the bondslave of him who rules mankind,

    Before whom kings supplicate in awe.

    شَهمٌ شَريفٌ سَيِّدٌ وسَمَيْدَعُ

    A master, resolute, glorious, foremost,

    Valiant, noble, a lord and generous chief;

    A star, a full moon, a sun of guidance that has shone,

    A light, a radiance rising among high honors.

    Above the Milky Way a tent was pitched for him,

    Yet it is raised on the pillars of high honors.

    The stars fall when they see it, for they

    Are what stud it like pearls.

    نَسّابَةٌ وَهوَ الإِمامُ اللّوذَعُ

    A great scholar, profoundly discerning, keenly perceptive,

    A master of genealogy, the keen-witted imam;

    He possesses every virtue and bounty,

    And the man of graces gathers praiseworthy qualities.

    There is no excellence among virtues and sciences

    But what is worthy and most useful in it comes from him.

    لَبِسوا السّيادَةَ حُلّةً وَتَدرَّعوا

    The mainstay, the trusted one, the chief of a company

    Who donned lordship as a robe and as armor;

    مِثلُ البحارِ مِنَ المُحيط تُوزَّعُ

    One whose mere surplus is the excellence of the excellent,

    Like seas apportioned from the encompassing ocean;

    One whom the men of virtue unanimously declare

    Singular and unique in his age: all agree.

    A scholar: to nothing but knowledge and piety

    Is his heart attached and devoted.

    No knowledgeable, scrupulous man appears

    But he appears more pious and scrupulous than that man.

    No expert has ever been baffled by a difficulty

    Without finding his recourse in him.

    He is an authority for the faith, not an opponent,

    As though he were the faith's keen-edged sword.

    He forbids and commands; no shyness deters him

    From speaking truth among mankind and proclaiming it aloud.

    He fears none but Him who made the sky,

    While following the proprieties of sacred law.

    أَكرِمْ بِهِ فَهوَ الكريمُ الأَروَعُ

    Fair in every trait and quality;

    How noble he is—the generous, the admirable!

    A chieftain, a stallion, a lion, a cutting sword,

    And a lion—he is the bravest of lions.

    Steadfast of heart, unfrightened by alarm,

    Not a man whom disturbances can terrify.

    He shows fortitude, being strong and steadfast,

    And when calamity befalls him, he does not quail.

    The true youth, courage's lion-cub, is he who, when

    The reversals of time assail him, does not waver.

    Quss, Sahban, and Ka'b of Ya'rub—

    What is al-Buhturi beside him, the eloquent, resounding orator?

    If among master orators he says, 'Now then,'

    They tell him, 'You are the commanding orator.'

    His eloquence fashioned expression into a pearl,

    Within whose beauty the water of grace is stored.

    Each fresh invention, when it enters the mind,

    Bewitches reason, wondrous and supremely accomplished.

    Thus hidden gems come from his verse,

    And pearls and rubies from his rhymed prose.

    He embodies all the noble; it is not impossible

    That the noble have gathered in this one noble man.

    ذو الجودِ مَن يُعطي وَلَم يَكُ يَمنَعُ

    He gives and never withholds, however great the giving;

    The man of generosity is he who gives and never withholds.

    Were the world held within the grasp of his hand,

    You would see it among the things he freely gives away.

    For forbearance and courtesy are among his traits,

    And goodness and kindness among the things he does.

    His fame is nothing but a waft of ambergris,

    Or the perfume of musk whose fragrance spreads abroad.

    He attained all he attained singly, alone,

    As though he were the sun, which has no second.

    Whoever stretches the necks of longing toward this

    Is a fool, subdued by falling short.

    O master, Abu al-Nasr, in whom

    The pride of victory rises and is exalted,

    You gifted me a poem like a secluded maiden,

    Like the sun—indeed, outshining it.

    A lovely virgin among the daughters of eloquence,

    Clothed in beauty and veiled in splendor.

    وَمِنَ الفَرائِدِ ما أَراه يُضَيَّعُ

    You squandered it on one unworthy of it;

    And some peerless jewels I see squandered.

    وَأَنا اِمرُؤٌ في ضدّ ما قَد تَسمَعُ

    None of the praise you devised in that poem was in me;

    I am a man the opposite of what you hear.

    That was only because you were beholding

    In us your own perfection, shining and gleaming.

    Or you followed the path of abstraction when

    You fashioned in it what delights and dazzles.

    Since it answered a poem, I fancied it

    Birds singing when a frog croaked.

    I have indeed strung a necklace of poetry,

    Shining with acclaim in the light of praising you.

    Radiant, fair-faced, a tender maiden,

    The water of beauty flows across her face.

    I refined her with a discerning man's refinement,

    For a refined man who gathers every grace.

    In her, in praising you, I gathered a fragment

    Of the qualities you possess and unite.

    I beheld dry land: no distance did I cross

    But a vaster sea appeared before me from it.

    تَبغي القبولَ وَدونَهُ لا تَهجَعُ

    I set her on the back of hope as her mount;

    She seeks acceptance, nor rests until she gains it.

    She was led to you as a bride; her beauty and modesty

    Are the brightest, loftiest tent within the bridal chambers.

    إِنَّ الحِسانَ مِنَ العَقارِبِ تُلسَعُ

    Should her enviers fault her, she would not be degraded;

    Indeed, beautiful women are stung by scorpions.

    Remain safe and ever enjoy all you seek, so long as

    Doves sing among the boughs and coo.
