وماand not وَعدتُI promised وقَصديand my intention خُلفُbreaking مَوعِدِكُمthe promise to you
وما وَعدتُ وقَصدي خُلفُ مَوعِدِكُم
حاشايَfar be it from me منfrom ذاكَthat مَعقولاًin reason ومنقولاand in tradition
حاشايَ من ذاكَ مَعقولاً ومنقولا
I did not promise intending to break my pledge to you;
I have not promised, nor intended to fail your appointment
Far be that from me, in reason and tradition.
Far be it from me, rationally or relationally
وَإِنّماand only رُمْتI sought مَطلَdeferring الوعدِthe promise مَعرِفةًknowing
وَإِنّما رُمْت مَطلَ الوعدِ مَعرِفةً
بِأَنَّof the fact that أَحلاهُits sweetest ماthat which قَدalready كانَwas مَمطُولاdeferred
بِأَنَّ أَحلاهُ ما قَد كانَ مَمطُولا
I only sought to defer fulfilling the promise, knowing
Rather, I intended to postpone the promise, knowing
That the sweetest promise is one deferred.
That the sweetest of it is what has been delayed
