ذاthis ضريحٌa tomb وروضةٌand a garden منamong جِنانٍgardens of Paradise
ذا ضريحٌ وروضةٌ من جِنانٍ
زُيِّنتwas adorned بِالرّضاwith favor وَفضلِand the bounty of الكريمِthe Generous One
زُيِّنت بِالرّضا وَفضلِ الكريمِ
Here is a tomb, a garden from the gardens of Paradise,
This is a tomb and a garden among the gardens of Paradise,
adorned with divine good pleasure and the Generous One’s grace.
Adorned with favor and the bounty of the Generous One.
حَلَّهاdwelt within it جَوهَرٌa jewel مِنَof المَجدِglory فَردٌpeerless
حَلَّها جَوهَرٌ مِنَ المَجدِ فَردٌ
لِلمَعاليin lofty virtues كَالشَّمسِlike the sun بَينَamong النُّجومِthe stars
لِلمَعالي كَالشَّمسِ بَينَ النُّجومِ
A peerless jewel of glory has alighted within it,
Within it rests a peerless jewel of glory,
destined for the heights, like the sun among the stars:
In lofty virtues, like the sun among the stars.
ضَيْغمٌa lion فيin الحروبwars ليثُa lion of عرينٍthe den
ضَيْغمٌ في الحروب ليثُ عرينٍ
مُحكمُfirm in الرأيِjudgment بالحِجىthrough reason المستقيمِsound
مُحكمُ الرأيِ بالحِجى المستقيمِ
a fierce lion in battle, a lion of the lair,
A lion in battle, a lion of the den,
whose judgment was made sure by unerring reason.
Firm in judgment through sound reason.
فَهيَthus it is مَثوىthe resting place of عليِّone lofty in قدرٍrank وعزٍّand honor
فَهيَ مَثوى عليِّ قدرٍ وعزٍّ
وَجَنابٍand dignity واسمٍand renown وجاهٍand standing فخيمِaugust
وَجَنابٍ واسمٍ وجاهٍ فخيمِ
Thus it is the resting place of one exalted in rank and might,
Thus it is the resting place of one lofty in rank and honor,
of distinguished bearing and august prestige.
And in dignity, renown, and august standing.
كانَhe was لِلعَدلِfor justice فيamong الأَنامِhumankind مُحبّاًa lover
كانَ لِلعَدلِ في الأَنامِ مُحبّاً
وَحَليماًand forbearing فيin الدَّهرِhis time أَيhow very حليمِforbearing
وَحَليماً في الدَّهرِ أَي حليمِ
He loved justice among all people,
He was a lover of justice among humankind,
and was forbearing all his days—what a forbearing man!
And forbearing in his time—how forbearing!
فَعَلىso over قَبرِهِhis grave تَهبُّblows دَواماًcontinually
فَعَلى قَبرِهِ تَهبُّ دَواماً
مِنfrom رِضاءِthe favor of الرّحمنِthe Most Merciful خَيرthe finest نسيمِbreeze
مِن رِضاءِ الرّحمنِ خَير نسيمِ
Thus over his grave there blows forever
So over his grave forever blows
the finest breeze of the All-Merciful’s favor.
The finest breeze from the Most Merciful’s favor.
طابَis sweet أَرِّخْrecord the date مهبُّthe blowing of breezes at مثوىthe resting place of عليّAli
طابَ أَرِّخْ مهبُّ مثوى عليّ
كَرَّمَmay honor اللَّهGod وَجهَهhis face بنعيمِwith bliss
كَرَّمَ اللَّه وَجهَه بنعيمِ
How sweet! Mark its date with: “Its wafting-place is Ali’s resting place—
Sweet is—record the date—the breeze at Ali’s resting place;
may God honor his countenance with bliss.”
May God honor his face with bliss.
