He whose essence is pure, kneaded from generosity
with the water of glory, long free of murk;
وَمَنand he who غَداhas become فيon محيّاthe face of المَجدِglory غرَّتهُits radiant brow

and he who has become the radiant brow on glory's face—
how noble a brow, among the fairest of brows!

And he who is the peerless pearl, alone of its kind—
had it not existed, we would not have known the worth of pearls.
بَدرُthe full moon of الجَزايِرِAlgiers لاmay not زالَتcease to be مَطالِعُهُhis rising places

The full moon of Algiers—may his rising places ever be
the summits of glory, and above the radiant stars.

If the sun knew that the West was his rising place,
it would never in its life have known the East as a place to dawn.

He has indeed clothed himself in kindness of character,
with a fair name, held in honor and spread far and wide.
وَهوَand he is الفَريدُthe peerless one كَمالاًin perfection عَنapart from معاصِرِهِhis contemporary

And he stands apart in perfection from his contemporaries,
and every age has its one outstanding man.

And the sum of what is said of him is that he is a man
without equal, at first glance and upon reflection.

وَالدرُّand pearls فيin البحرِthe sea جمٌّabundant غيرُnot مُنحَصِرِbounded
I could never number all his virtues,
and pearls in the sea are abundant, beyond counting.

وَالبحرَand the sea يُمدَحُis praised إِجمالاًin summary بمُختصرِin brief words
I chose a summary in praising him, keeping it brief,
and the sea is praised in a brief summation.

May he never cease trailing the hem of glory in nobility,
across the peaks of greatness, exalted in rank.

and the trees' nightingale stands there as an orator;

with every original thought, cast in novel verse.
