Glad tidings of good, accompanied by good fortune,

Have indeed gladdened the spirits of every companion.

And all creation was clothed in a robe of joy,

So it swayed therein, strutting with the sway of full-breasted maidens.

And spread lights of delight across the horizons,

So the horizons shone with them on every side.

And it set creation, earth, and sky dancing,

And no dance is seen to equal the dance of the stars.

It announces that the time has now grown clear,

And drawn the keenest blade against all cares.

For at this moment the clear waters of the drinking places are sweet.

Radiating light that holds sway over every path,

With the rising of glory on the summits of honor and eminence,

    Of the highest nobility, at the loftiest of ranks;

With a reign of honor amid the proud glories of lordship,

    With a procession of good fortune, among the most august processions;

With elevated standing among the heights of noble virtues,

With a station of prestige, among the honorable stations.

    فَيا عَجزَ أَطماعِ اِزدِحامِ المَناكِبِ

    And glory's Pleiades were set apart therein for you to inhabit;

Oh, how powerless the ambitions of jostling shoulders!

May joy be yours therein, in its presence and its dawning,

In every quarter of the horizon, even the western reaches.

And that sun was none other than our emir,

The lion of al-Shara, the fierce lion who fells battalions.

Emir of lofty deeds, with tall spears and liberality,

And with keen, unsheathed, slicing blades.

    لَهُ السّيفُ وَالأَرماحُ أَقوى مَخالِبِ

    When he charges, he is the lion in the thick of battle;

The sword and spears are his strongest claws.

And displays every wonder amid its terrors.

Strong of heart, he plunges into a sea of battle-tumults,

    And enters its current unafraid.

And gallops on a noble, white-stockinged steed,

White-blazed, swift, tall and long-bodied, not emaciated.

It races the rushing wind and lightning when it gallops,

Its forehead close to the piercing stars.

If he roared at the enemies with a lion's roar,

You would see them either dead or fleeing.

And you would see their young men, from such terrors, turned—

Their locks now gray—into feeble graybeards.

The enemy's heart is quickest to melt with terror.

Father of forbearance, an ocean of generosity, whose hand's bounty

Has undertaken to put the clouds' downpour to shame.

The God of the Throne bestowed on him a rank from Himself,

That rose to the peaks of eminence above all shoulders.

It came to be called 'Chief of the Gatekeepers,' and indeed

It is the white blaze upon the face of ranks.

The largesse of a state generously bestowed it upon him,

The beautiful state, endowed with glorious merits.

It is the exalted state, whose like is rarely found,

And has any risen high except one with few peers?

It rose through the son of Uthman, the sovereign who indeed

Inherited it from grandfather to grandfather, down to his father.

It came to him at the hands of the vizier Abu al-Ula,

Namesake of the son of Dawud, of praiseworthy achievements.

Through his lofty resolve, and through his determination, which

Is a sword—indeed, the sharpest of keen, cutting blades.

When he draws it for what he desires and seeks,

You see him with it, without doubt, the swiftest to strike.

May this vizier never cease to be granted, from the heights,

Ranks of glory wherein lies the dignity of office.

    O magnificent emir who ascended

Openly to glory's summit, with no barrier,

And who, among those of rank and eminence,

Whenever he appears, is like the sun among the stars:

To you, brother of kindness, generosity, and bounty,

A daughter of thought, whom you have guarded from faults.

And I fashioned her from the pure gold of eloquence,

And clothed her in precious robes made from it.

And adorned her neck with pearls of praise for you,

And adorning a full-breasted maiden with pearls of praise lends splendor.

And sent her on my behalf to offer congratulations,

And in that she is my finest deputy.

And to strive for that through her was a duty,

Yet through her I fulfill only part of my duty.

So grant her a welcoming acceptance, with approval,

For your approval is surely the loftiest of gifts.

And remain in God's protection, in honor and eminence,

Happy, prosperous in life, with clear drinking waters,

With peace of heart, then body and mind,

Free of grief, then worry, then hardships.

    Healthy, long-lived, protected from harm,

And appearing against your enemies the most triumphant victor.

For all time, as long as a star appears or vanishes,

And the full moon's light effaces the darkness,

And a breeze blows and doves sing,

Revealing every wonder in their song,

And as long as, bringing every joy and felicity, there come

Glad tidings of good, accompanied by good fortune.
