وَتَجلَّت بِالجَمالِ الأَنفَسِ
Beauty's daughter—through her, beauty has soared,
The beauty's daughter, in whom beauty thrives
and she has revealed herself in the most precious beauty.
And perfect grace in souls is seen alive

تَخسِفُ البَدرَ وَكلّ الخنَّسِ
She eclipses the sun and effaces the stars;
Eclipsing sun, extinguishing the stars
she eclipses the full moon and all the retreating stars.
Occluding moon, and every comet mars

حُسنَها عَن أَن يُضاهى بِمِثالْ
God fashioned her from beauty and guarded
God made her of sheer beauty, kept her pure
her beauty from being matched by any likeness.
Lest matched her beauty be, of that be sure

God adorned beauty with her and embellished it,
With her God beauty graced, and granted her
while others were adorned with beauty drawn from it.
Its ornament, a perfect decorator

She is the very essence of beauty in every age;
She is beauty's fount, in every age and hour
from her the essence of beauty overflowed and streamed.
Beauty's essence from her freely did shower

فَهمَهُ بَل هُوَ عَينُ الأَهوَسِ
Whoever likens her to a sun has lost
To liken her to suns reveals confused mind
his understanding; indeed, he is folly incarnate.
Nay, 'tis the soul's true vision rendered blind

His judgment is corrupted by ignorance and blindness;
Incorrect of thought and lacking insight
had he seen the difference here, he would not have compared.
Had they but seen the difference in her light

Her cheek is a garden of beauty, yet it is fire;
Her cheek a garden of beauty, while a fire
she delighted my heart there through torment.
Tormenting my heart with sweet, painful desire

The rose buds in her, ruby melts away
and in it the ruby of my entrails melted.
In her, my inner jewels waste away

And around it curled the silk of her cheek-side,
On her the brocade of olden days took pride
seeking eternal Paradise without a doubt.
Seeking in her eternal youth beside

My father be ransomed for that fire in which the rose grew,
By God! The rose buds in her fiery cheek
and clothed itself in the finest silk.
In her the choice brocade its glory did seek

Kissing this fire quenches thirst,
To kiss this fire dispelling grief and care
just as it holds healing for souls.
Just as within it lies the soul's repair

Her beauty mark is the pupil of my eye, now revealed
In her there lies a human, clear as day
above that cheek like ambergris.
Above her cheek, like amber's gentle sway

And there, in bashful beauty, it appeared:
And on her beauty's garden he appeared
a dot upon the sun or upon the moon.
As drop on sun or moon when vision's cleared

There in the sun it is, as the account confirms,
He is as sun described in ancient verse
like the eye's black pupil amid its white.
Like black of eye midst purest houri's face

My father be ransomed for that ambergris, resplendent wherever
By God! Wherever amber shows its pride
it lies, planted above the rose.
Above the rose it joyfully resides

And it is musk, sheltered in the cheek's blaze,
And it, by blazing cheek, finds its perfume
beneath the sword's shadow, then the narcissus's.
Beneath the sword-leaf's shade and the narcissus bloom

As if in ruby it was nourished from the vine

A chain so sweet, the West forgets its drought
Sipping it truly brings the dead to life.
When by her mouth revived, death put to rout

No chronic illness touched the one who sipped
however chronic, without finding his cure in it.
Except by it the cure was quickly gripped

Her intoxicating fragmented glance
and is kohled with the enchantment of dark eyes.

And through it the plundering of souls has long endured.

it shoots arrows into the lovelorn one's entrails.

And it is intoxicated with two wines, which are
I wonder who has seen or ever known
the wine of beauty and the wine of drowsiness.
A sorcerer 'mid humans or jinn shown

Her dark-pupilled, white-eyed glance is a cleaving sword;
To hunt the sun from heaven's drape unfurled
it has left no heart without slaying it.
Or liken it to earthly maids and girls?

Within it is a pupil, yet a sorcerer,
Her face, the sun, erased all beauty's traces
weaving magic into a snare for the likes of me.
The noblest of beauty from them it erases

Her temple amidst the sun distinctly shows
by God, it would catch it from the heart of the heavens.
Where the arch of eyebrows ascended grows

As they never set when the starling flew

Her face is the sun; it effaced the beauty of the fair,
That night draws nigh in darkest gloom
and their loftiest beauty was brought low.
That dawn glows bright shedding its plume

Her temple-lock, a scorpion, appeared amid the sun,
Her stature is the branch, but with a bend
rising beside the bow of her two eyebrows.
From the hand of beauty it bows and does extend
فَرعُهاher hair وَالفَرقُand its parting لَيلٌnight وَصَباحand morning

Her hair and its parting are night and morning;
Scornful of spear in height and straightness both
in beauty they rose above the sun of her face.
And bends my heart while straightening its growth

Whene'er beauty tilts toward it with a lean
neither disappeared when dense darkness fell.
It scorns the bend just like the branch's mien

That night grew ever darker;
It scorns the branch, which if it knew
that morning illuminates the predawn gloom.
It wished it hadn't into life breakthrough

Her figure is a bough, but with coquettish grace
Her neck as pillar of the dawn's first light
it emerged from Beauty's hand, swaying.
Its beauty transcending planet's shine so bright

It scorns the spear in height and straightness;
On it a necklace of pearls and gems lies bare
alas for my heart—because of it, my back is bent.
In which the eyes and minds entangled there

Whenever Beauty bends its side,
As if horizon stars that come and go
its sway scorns the swaying boughs.
Their brilliance from the east to west does flow

Does any other scorn the bough? Not
By God! A necklace of gems was strung
every figure can disdain it through graceful swaying.
As pillar of dawn in its glory was sung
وَلوand if الغصنthe bough بِهذاof this أَعلَماwere informed
وَلو الغصن بِهذا أَعلَما

لَتَمنّى أَنَّه لَم يُغرَسِ
Were the bough informed of this,
Under the sun's rays, a smiled it wore
it would wish it had never been planted.
Like the pleats of cassia, gilt and more

حُسنُهُ فاقَ ضِياءَ الكَوكبِ
Her neck appeared like the pillar of dawn;
A coronet for beauty, in which beauty prides
its beauty surpassed the star's radiance.
While beauty's pride in finest crown resides

And upon it is a necklace of pearls and lustrous beads,
If it the sun saw, it would cease to gleam
at which the gaze was bewildered and the mind taken captive.
Lest shamed, eclipsed, the sunlight it redeem

Like the horizon's stars, they appear before the eyes,
With highest beauty, it boasts and gloats galore
their light reaching from east to west.
It spoke the truth, for boasting is no more

My father be ransomed for those stars, strung as a necklace,
Except through Ali, him exalted in rank
in which the pillar of dawn clothes itself,
To whom the heads are raised, and knees they sank

beneath the sun's radiance, in light that smiled;
Through him glory ascended to its place
and the Pleiades of her earring are like a flame.
And thereby sneezing loudest does take place

The hallmark of honor and pride's own crest
a beauty's pride, wearing the finest ornaments.
Epoch's glory, and my parents' best

for fear of eclipse and the humiliation of shame.
And then the night and late stars' opportune

Such boasting, though so very rare to see
she speaks truly: pride is only in Ali.
Such glory, and with it clad so rarely
