وَعانَقتهُand I embraced him مِثلَlike المُسلّمِone offering a greeting قائِماstanding
وَعانَقتهُ مِثلَ المُسلّمِ قائِما
وَقَدand already قامَhe rose تِلقائيfacing me لأَجلِfor the sake of وَداعِfarewell
وَقَد قامَ تِلقائي لأَجلِ وَداعِ
And I embraced him, standing like one offering a greeting,
I embraced him like a Muslim standing
While he had risen facing me to bid farewell.
Though he had arisen of his own accord to bid farewell
لِخَوفيbecause of my fear مِنَof الأَعداءِthe enemies أَنthat يَشمَتواthey might gloat بِناover us
لِخَوفي مِنَ الأَعداءِ أَن يَشمَتوا بِنا
وَقَفتُI stood لَدَيهِbefore him مثلlike مُثنٍone offering praise وَداعيand one praying
وَقَفتُ لَدَيهِ مثل مُثنٍ وَداعي
For fear that the enemies would gloat over us,
Fearing our foes' gloating over our plight
I stood before him like one offering praise and prayer.
I stood by him like one about to part, bidding adieu
