    لَهُ كامِلو النّسّاكَ أُذْناً قَدِ اِهتَووا

    And by one rosy of cheek, with narcissus-like glances,

    For whom the most devout ascetics have fallen in love, all ears;

    مَشايخ عِلم السّحر عَن لَحظِهِ رووا

    And by one full of true magic from his drooping eyelid,

    From whose glance the masters of magic have passed down their lore;

    عَلى لَدغِ أَحشاءِ المَشوقِ قَدِ اِحتَووا

    And by the wāw-shaped curls at his temples, resembling scorpions,

    That harbor a sting for the yearning lover's entrails;

    مِنَ المِسكِ فَوقَ الجلّنار قَد اِلتووا

    And by his cheeks' embroidery with lām-shaped side-whiskers,

    Of musk, curled above the pomegranate blossom;

    أُولو العِشقِ أَحداقاً عَليها لَقَد هووا

    And by his red cheek, glowing like an ember,

    Upon which the eyes of lovers have indeed fallen;

    عَلَيها قُلوب العاشِقينَ قَدِ اِكتَووا

    And by his cheeks' flame, burning with beauty and bashfulness,

    Upon which the hearts of lovers have been seared;

    And my affection for him endures, and I heed no

    Words but those of the tempters who have strayed in love.

    And I seek union with him, and shall surely disregard

    The words of an envious person and the reproachers, should they howl.

    And by God, I shall not forget him, even if I become a rotting corpse,

    And even if the reproachers cut my flesh and roast it.

    And my thought of forgetting him has no existence—

    And how could I, when my entrails enfold love for him?
