Water, O rain, morning and evening,

Every abode of the Arabs and the Arabic tongue.

And weave, O east breeze, for those dwellings

A fine-silken robe from their plants.

And crown yourself, O their garden, with flowers

    Created by an eternal will.

And carry, O east breeze, each morning

    Ambergris-scented wafts of their fragrance.

And with them spread fragrance over all the Bedouins—

Settled dwellers and people of hair tents.

For they are my nation, dear to me,

A nation of glory, proud defiance, and protective zeal.

Go on, O my noble nation, drive away

    Those who worship personal gain:

    Every dullard, wavering in misery,

Wandering lost in the earth's uncharted wastes.

Modesty and reason left him when

The holy places cast him out.

May God smite whoever desires discord

Among the sons of his own people, for a base end.

    فهي والله بالمراد حرية

    O Arabs, form a union;

For, by God, it is suited to the desired end.

And if unity proves difficult for you,

Then let there be concord, through which the remainder is preserved.

O my people—and all my people are gallant—

Division is nothing but the worst calamity.

O my people—and all my people are zealous for honor—

Turn, turn toward your national identity.

    إنما الفخر النسبة القومية

    In ancestry, clay has nothing to boast of;

Pride lies only in national belonging.

I am an Arab in every sense,

And my Arab identity is honor enough for me.

Every span of the Peninsula where I seek refuge

Is my home and my Arab mother.

Thus mine are al-Sham, Iraq, and Najd,

Like the Hijaz and the Yemeni expanse.

O you who deceive the Arabs, hold back!

Between you and what you hope for lies the sea of death,

And full-grown beasts of prey in every crisis,

Keeping watch over affairs morning and evening.

Every gallant man yearns for martyrdom,

    Desiring immortality for all eternity.
