Is this Ibn Zayn's bounty, or rains pouring down?

And are these meadow flowers, or smiling mouths?

For pastures grow lush only through rain,

from the season, or from one born of noble men.

I see people strutting proudly, as though

a slender, tender one had served them heady wine.

have landmarks of learning been built there?

Leave me a moment to ponder what I envision:

is what I imagined happening while awake, or am I asleep?

for in every city his noble deeds are recounted.

So welcome to the most illustrious, the winner of praise!

You have arrived, and fortune's mouth smiles with gladness.

Indeed, any land you have visited is radiant,

and any celebration without you is gloomy.

You have won the hearts of all people, as though

love for you were a pool, and hearts the birds circling it.

And through you, glory has rivaled the full moons in majesty,

and your bounty has shamed the rain, even as it pours.

and your renown is the brightest thing biographies contain.

The two peoples vie over you, seeking distinction

through your eminence—distinguished Arabs and non-Arabs.

He who named you Muhammad did not err in judgment,

Ali, exalted in honors—or the signs had guided him.

    لك الحظ والإقبال خل وخادم

    May favor be upon you, chosen one, the finest of the favored;

fortune and prosperity are your friend and servant.

For you are the one who awakened a nation to learning,

upon whose heart lay a coal-black darkness of ignorance.

And there is no peace in this world for one resigned to fate

when calamities from Europe overtake him.

with glory its foundation and noble deeds its pillars.

I withdrew into obscurity when I thought my age's

sons were idle—and this is what the turbans wrought.

and deceived, so the grazing herds obeyed him.

and whoever follows anything but guidance is sinful.

Has any lawgiver come after Ibn Abd Allah,

and does anything but God's Book judge in truth?
