وأنت له دون البرية حائز

Is forsaking one tormented at heart permissible to you,

Forsaking the heart's meaning with you is allowed

while you alone, of all creation, possess his heart?

While you possess it without the wilderness

خف الله في صب غريم موله

خف الله في صب غريم موله

ولا تقطعنه فهو والله عائز

ولا تقطعنه فهو والله عائز

Fear God in your treatment of a pining lover, love-bound and distraught.

Fear God in pouring on an enemy unjustly treated

And do not cut him off, for, by God, he is in need.

And do not cut him off, for by Allah, he is helpless

على أي شيء منك يستوجب الجفا

For what reason does he deserve coldness from you?

On what thing from you is the estrangement deserved

His strength and natural faculties have weakened from what ails him.

Strengthen him and revive him from what is in him and natural dispositions

أتجفوا محبا دق جثمانه الضنى

أتجفوا محبا دق جثمانه الضنى

وذاب حشى والحب في القلب آرز

وذاب حشى والحب في القلب آرز

Do you spurn a lover whose body sickness has worn thin,

You estranged a loving one whose body became thin from distress

and whose inward parts have melted, while love is firmly lodged in his heart?

And whose innermost being melted, and love in the heart settled

ومن عجب دعواك انك مولع

ومن عجب دعواك انك مولع

بحبي وما بي أنت في الحب فائز

بحبي وما بي أنت في الحب فائز

And strange is your claim that you are enamored

And from the wonders of your claim, you are infatuated

of me, yet you find no success with me in love.

With my love, yet in love you over me are not victorious

فلا تدعي حبي وأنت مصادمي

فلا تدعي حبي وأنت مصادمي

ولا تعذلني إنني عنك ناكز

ولا تعذلني إنني عنك ناكز

So do not claim to love me while you oppose me,

So do not claim my love while you oppose me

and do not reproach me: I am withdrawing from you.

And do not blame me, for indeed from you I recoiled

فلا خير في خل خلي من الوفا

For there is no good in a friend devoid of loyalty,

For there is no good in a bosom friend lacking loyalty

nor in a love where there is harm and strife.

Nor in a passion which has harm and conflict
