    I yearned, and tears flowed in floods down my cheek;

and I lamented my passion to excess, but to no avail.

How often I said, when the east wind passed by me before dawn:

Ah, east wind of Najd, when did you rise from Najd?

For your night passage has added longing to my longing.

My heart is drunk with love; it has not sobered.

And my tears have revealed my sorrow and made it plain.

And my yearning grows whenever the gray doves cry out.

Is it because a gray dove calls in the splendor of morning,

on a bough among branches of ben and bay,

that I remain, my soul still stricken,

my heart aflame, never free of sorrow?

And when my liver melted with longing,

I wept with yearning as a newborn weeps,

and voiced complaints I had never voiced before.

I loved; and ever since love became my constant habit,

I have fallen, finding only worry and suffering.

And to us, the dwelling’s nearness and remoteness are alike.

And they have claimed that when a lover draws near,

he grows weary, and that distance cures love’s anguish.

Had that been true, love could not have endured in us,

nor would the fire of heartache have blazed in our hearts.

And estrangement has not harmed us; yet, by our Lord,

we tried every remedy, yet none cured what ails us,

though the dwelling’s nearness is better than distance.

    Yesterday, then, I lamented distance, with none to restrain me;

and today I lament estrangement—is there anyone to ward it off?

And neither far nor near have I found an intercessor,

though the dwelling’s nearness is of no use

if the one you love has no affection for you.
