لعمرك ما عقل الفتى وعلومه

وآدابه من غير حظ لها قدر

By your life, a young man's intellect and knowledge,

And his refinement, have no worth without good fortune.

فإن جاد يوماً حظه نال قصده

فإن جاد يوماً حظه نال قصده

ولو كان من فقع الفلاة له تجر

ولو كان من فقع الفلاة له تجر

For if his fortune is generous one day, he attains his aim,

Even if his trade were in desert truffles.

فكم من غني جاهل بلغ المنى

فكم من غني جاهل بلغ المنى

وكم من أديبٍ عاقل عاقه الدهر

وكم من أديبٍ عاقل عاقه الدهر

For many an ignorant rich man has attained his wishes,

And many a cultured, wise man has been hindered by time.

فصبراً أخي صبراً جميلا فقلما

فصبراً أخي صبراً جميلا فقلما

رأينا صبوراً ليس يقضى له أمر

رأينا صبوراً ليس يقضى له أمر

So be patient, my brother, with beautiful patience—for seldom

Have we seen a patient man for whom nothing is accomplished.
