Listen, Saʿd, you have shown doubt,

and a man's doubt about events is a disease.

Whatever matter you have paused over—true

or false as it is judged—there is a remedy for it.

And the Prophet has spoken and set a limit,

by which the blood of certain people may lawfully be shed:

Three: one who kills a soul, and a fornicator,

and an apostate against whom judgment has been passed.

Then if the imam should be guilty, among these,

of a single one, no allegiance is due to him.

And if not, what you have done is forbidden,

and his killer and the one who forsakes him are alike.

And this is the ruling on him; there is no doubt in it,

just as the sky is the sky.

And the best speech is that in which you are brief,

and in your wordiness lies an incurable disease.

Abu ʿAmr, I called on you among other men,

so the rope passed beyond the bucket's crossbars.

But since you have refused, there is not between me

and you any sacred bond; hope is gone,

save my saying, when Quraysh gathers:

May ruin from God fall upon Saʿd!
