Your age swayed until it reeled;
Your fate sways until it becomes turbulent
And one's side may bend, though not from delight.
And tenderness may bend, not due to rapture

An age passed, and an age came,
Time has passed and time has come
And between the two ages lies utter wonder.
And between the two times lies all strangeness

So some people descended beneath the earth,
Some have descended beneath the soil
And others rose above the shooting stars.
And some have ascended above the clouds

The calamities of time have indeed admonished us,
The vicissitudes of time have advised us
And some calamities are like some sermons.
Some of the vicissitudes are like some sermons

Had people known the path of benefits
To the path of benefit except calamities.
They would not take it except out of shame

Oh Lord, an illness may become a cure
When medicine and the physician fail.
When medicine fails and the healer despairs

Among the woes of fate is that one who
Dispelled afflictions now lives in affliction.
Relieved anguish becomes embroiled in worries

Has come to be plundered among them.
He wakes among them despoiling

And how the Arabs' glory has crumbled?

But our climber is now on a downward slope.
