You planted love within my ribs,

so how could I not water it with my tears?

Had you wished, O sweet of dusky lips, it would not have lingered all night—

    this heart's thirst—unquenched.

Nor would I have spent the night you shunned me

moving from one harsh bed to another.

    وإن دعوتُ النومَ لم يسمعِ

    When sleeplessness calls me, I answer it;

but if I call to sleep, it does not hear.

I ask my night why it has not departed,

and why the morning star has not risen.

And I imagine the birds, when they trill,

yearn for the one I love, and so lament with me.

A slender-waisted one: his phantom satisfies me,

yet he is satisfied with nothing but my soul.

Of those who have seen his face, I have met none

but a youth in love—or claiming to be.

O forsaker, whose glance has made me ill,

every remedy has failed to heal me.

How many a burning anguish has constricted my breast,

and a pang I have hidden even from my ribs,

and a grief within the soul that never left

the ʿUdhri youth's heart until his death was announced.

I leave it behind me for the people of love,

from one stricken heart to another.

It brings the sovereign down from his throne

    before love's most exalted throne,

and sends terror, on the day of battle,

into the most devout hero's heart.

So send my heart a greeting from you,

    that I may spread it within that place;

it will bring sleep back to my eyes,

for sleep has gone and has not returned.

How often love has commanded, and how often it has forbidden!

So I spent the night weeping, and did not sleep.

And whoever has his love as his guide

is led, against his will, to his death.
