You have forbidden us sleep, O night.
You denied me sleep, O night
Have separation and love’s anguish not been enough?
Has not longing and the pangs of love sufficed?
مهلاًwait أبثُّI pour out وجديmy anguish وقفْand halt
لاnot ينقلُcarry الواشونَthe tale-bearers عناabout us الكلامْthe words
Wait—let me pour out my anguish, and stand still.
Gently, I vent my passion and stop -
Let no tale-bearers carry word of us.
Let not the spies transmit my words.

And control the path to dawn; for the people, if
Hold back the dawn, though the love-sick one
Doves lament, will take me for the doves.
Thinks the cooing dove is me.

O night, I bear my sorrow and humankind’s injustice,
O night, within me is my care and the world's injustice,
And you, and separation—all are darkness.
While you and separation and all is darkness.

I see you as a grave for lovers; is there
I see you as a grave for lovers - so is there
Anything left of lovers within you but bones?
Within you anything but bones of lovers?

Have mercy, O night, have mercy!
And a thousand times, have mercy—and let me sleep.
A thousand mercies upon you, let me sleep.

Perhaps her apparition will visit my bed,
May her phantom visit my bed,
And today she may grant me even a greeting.
And be gentle today, even with a greeting.

Alas for the sickness of love! And love,
Woe to me from the malady of passion!
If I cry ‘Alas!’, increases my sickness.
And if I say "Woe!" my sickness increases.
