علىupon الطرسينِthe two parchments منof خدٍa cheek وجيدِand a neck
ارىI see سطرينِtwo lines فيin معنىthe meaning الصدودِof rejection
Upon the two parchments of cheek and neck,
On the two cheeks, a cheek and a jaw
I see two lines expressing rejection.
I see two lines with the meaning of rejection
وقدand indeed سدَلتْshe let fall غدائرهاher tresses ترينيshowing me
تبدلَthe exchange بيضَthe white ones أياميof my days بسودِfor black ones
And she let her tresses fall, showing me
Her ringlets have fallen, showing me
the exchange of my white days for black.
The white days of my life turned black
وقطَّعنيand cut me to pieces الأسىsorrow والدمعُand the tears بحرٌa sea (also a poetic meter)
فعادَso it became بسيطُsimple (Basīṭ meter) هميّmy grief فيinto المديدِthe prolonged (Madīd meter)
And sorrow cut me to pieces, and my tears were a sea,
And sorrow and tears cut me like a sea
so my grief’s Basīṭ measure turned into Madīd.
So the plain of my worry returned stretched
ولماand when أمصدتْshe struck down (uncertain reading) قلبيmy heart بلحظٍwith a glance
علمتُI knew بأنهُthat it بيتُthe central verse القصيدِof the poem
And when she struck down my heart with a glance,
When my heart was closed with a glance
I knew it was the poem’s central verse.
I knew it was the last verse of the poem
لهاshe has دينٌa faith وليand I have دينٌa faith ولكنbut
أرىI see القلبينthe two hearts فيin دينٍa faith جديدِnew
She has her faith, and I have mine, yet
She has a religion and I have a religion but
I see the two hearts in a new faith.
I see both hearts into a new religion
وكمand how many منof ليلةٍa night مرّتpassed وأفقُand the horizon النجوthe stars (word continued)
مِcompletion of 'stars' كجيدهاlike her neck تحتَbeneath العقودِthe necklaces
And many a night passed, while the starry horizon
And how many nights have passed with the stars of dawn
was like her neck beneath the necklaces.
Under her braids below the knots
وقدand indeed وقفَstood الدُّجىnight’s darkness فزعاًin terror يصليpraying
وظلمةُand the darkness ذنبهِof its sin ملءُfilling الوجودِall existence
And night’s darkness stood in terror, praying,
The darkness stood up praying in horror
while the darkness of its sin filled all existence.
And the darkness of its sins filled existence
وأنفاسُand the breaths النسائمِof the breezes كهرباءٌelectricity
توصلُconnects بينَbetween قلبيَmy heart والخدودِand the cheeks
And the breaths of the breezes are electricity,
The breaths of the breezes are like electricity
linking my heart with the cheeks.
Connecting between my heart and the cheeks
وقدand indeed سعتِhastened اللحاظُthe glances بماwith what أردناwe wished
توكدُconfirming ينناbetween us (apparent typo) صدقُthe sincerity العهودِof the vows
And the glances hastened with what we wished,
The glances have conveyed what we wanted
confirming between us the sincerity of the vows.
Confirming between us the honesty of the covenants
فكمso how many لحظةٍa glance وكمand how many نفسٍa breath تراyou see ذاthis one

So many a glance and many a breath—you see one
So how many glances and breaths you see
as a telegraph, and the other as a mail carrier.
A telegraph here, a postman there
فعدتُso I returned ارىI see النعيمَbliss ولستُand I am not فيهِin it
كمثلِlike الغصنِthe bough شُبهwas likened بالقدودِto bodily forms
So I once again see bliss, though I am not in it,
I returned seeing the bliss but am not in it
like a bough likened to bodily forms.
Like a branch resembling the cut off
فلاso no أهلاًwelcome بأيامِto the days التجافيof estrangement

So, no welcome to the days of estrangement!
So no welcome to the days of estrangement
And O days of that union, return!
And O days of that connection, come back
