Upon the sky and above the sun are my poems,

And beneath the shells of this deep lie my thoughts.

And between that and this my pen has run,

With wondrous description of pearls and lights.

I see a beauty too exalted for me to encompass,

And glorious is its Creator—what an Originator and Maker!

As though the universe were a graceful, veiled woman,

Looking out radiantly from behind curtains.

    من فوقهِ جبهةٌ زينتْ بأقمارِ

    So the sea is her eye, and the land her eyebrow;

Above it is a forehead adorned with moons.

Or this sea was the sky's brocade, and now

The sash has come undone: behold the sky's bare breast.

Or she has donned robes of her night,

And buttoned them with buttons made of her stars.

Or the sun simply thought she had captivated

    Some people's eyes with beauty, but not other eyes;

And the earth became a dwelling for the sky; so

She set the sea as a mirror in this dwelling.

O dwelling of the radiant stars, how many wonders

And mysteries lie in the mine of gleaming pearls!

If you bear a sphere whose circuit has turned,

Then beneath you the deep whirls with a whirling orb.

Both of you are beautiful, and the beauty between you

Is like a garden fragrant with diverse flowers.

Indeed, I see the sun extinguished beneath the sea,

And water has always held power over fire.

As though it were the earth's palm, stretched out

Toward the sky, which generously gave it a dinar.

Or the sun plunged beneath the deep, fleeing,

So no worry or troubles weigh upon people.

Do you not see her yellow and terrified,

And the kindling fire-stick of that flame has died down?

People made themselves seem pure as angels out of

Wickedness of conscience, though they were not righteous.

And the sea outdid them in their deceit; likewise,

The earth bears none but consummate deceivers.

If they were fair, they would see it in its surging

Upon the earth like a ravening lion.

But one whose hearing is accustomed to melodies

Takes every roar for the blowing of a flute.

What ails the ocean? I see it baring its teeth in terror,

Scratching the earth from the deep with claws,

Unsheathing its blade in its gathering darkness,

Poised to spring between a cleaving blade and a current.

The waves raise it in fury, then sit it down,

Between one receding from it and one sweeping onward.

And the horizon is sometimes dejected, sometimes smiling,

Between pitch-dark night and the hours before dawn.

O people, the sea is indeed an admonition,

And the sea's uproar is nothing but a warning.

How many proofs God has against you through it!

Does He forgive sin except after apologies?

The sea is the softest thing to the touch; yet when

You treat it roughly, you discover what a tyrant it is.

Even if all creation joined forces, they could not

Hold back one wave from its flowing swell.

How, then, can the power of the sea's Lord be denied,

When that is only a trace of some of His works?

I believe in God; nothing I see is in vain,

Rather, they are acts of wisdom unfolding by decree.
