Toward the fair ones surges this unbridled ardor,

And for the dusky ones this wing beats.

The reproaching women blamed me for loving them,

Yet far from loving them are those who reproach.

For the fair ones are only the edges of swords,

And the dusky ones only the upper shafts of spears.

This youth shakes the earth with them,

And on it makes the springs of the plains bleed.

He sweeps through battle's turmoil as Death does,

And folds up the trackless wastes as the winds do,

On a chestnut steed, like a flash of lightning,

Spurred on by unbridled high spirits.

Bold against the night, with all his strength gathered,

He springs forth like the morning breeze.

So rapturous are his flanks that you almost

Think him drunk as he passes.
