This grief has kept me sleepless, O dove.

Have you, then, felt love as I feel it?

I spent the night on the bough, wailing and singing,

And I spent the night weeping for those who have gone far away.

And my eyes still stream with tears,

    And my ribs still blaze.

    طارَ بنومي ونومكَ السهدُ

    Indeed, we are both lovers, sick with longing;

Sleeplessness has flown off with my sleep and yours.

So draw aside gently; apart from my liver,

No liver melts, O stirrer of love's anguish.

I have a heart that loves beauty; and is

The body to blame for loving its soul?

One of slender waist tormented it by turning away,

Supple, his neck adorned with graceful length.

In his beauty the gazelles are exalted, while

In the kingdom of his beauty, the lion has been humbled.

Halt at his dwelling, you two, and ask him:

Is anything less than the promise he makes?

And sing, you two, if you see a ruined dwelling:

The land has grown desolate since the loved ones departed.
