فأصبحتُ من قولي احبكَ تغضبُ

They sowed discord between us until I, once truly content,

They spread rumors between us until I was content

came to find you angered by my saying, 'I love you.'

Then you became angry because I said "I love you"

ولم أجنِ ذنباً غيرَ أني ذو هوىً

ولم أجنِ ذنباً غيرَ أني ذو هوىً

وأنكَ لي دونَ الأنامِ محببُ

وأنكَ لي دونَ الأنامِ محببُ

And I have committed no sin, save that I am in love,

And I committed no sin except that I am full of passion

and that you alone among all people are dear to me.

And you are to me, beyond all people, the most beloved

وقالوا ستنسى إن تباعدَ بيننا

فيا ليتَ داري من دياركَ تقربُ

And they said, 'You will forget if distance grows between us.'

And they said you will forget if distance comes between us

So, if only my home could draw nearer to your dwellings!

Oh, if only my home were closer to your home

ويا ويلنا إن بتُّ أستعطفُ الهوى

ويا ويلنا إن بتُّ أستعطفُ الهوى

وبتَّ على حكمِ الهوى تتجنَّبُ

وبتَّ على حكمِ الهوى تتجنَّبُ

And woe to us if I spend the night pleading with love,

Oh what grief if I plead for love

while you spend the night keeping your distance under love's sway.

And you follow the rule of love and avoid me

فلا تمكنِ الواشينَ من ذاتِ بيننا

فلا تمكنِ الواشينَ من ذاتِ بيننا

فليسَ لهم غيرَ التفرقِ مطلبُ

فليسَ لهم غيرَ التفرقِ مطلبُ

So do not give the slanderers power over the bond between us,

So do not let those who gossip come between us

for they have no aim but our separation.

For they desire nothing but our separation

وإنكَ لو ابصرتَ ما بينَ أضلعي

وإنكَ لو ابصرتَ ما بينَ أضلعي

لأبصرتَ قلبي في لظىً يتقلبُ

لأبصرتَ قلبي في لظىً يتقلبُ

And truly, if you saw what lies between my ribs,

And if you could see what is within my ribs

you would surely see my heart writhing in flames.

You would see a heart tossing in fierce flames
